Next; Straights, HID and touch up paint. Also thinking wider rear tires which means rim change...... we'll see..... Anyone replaced the shifter? Is it a long enough post for something more modern and left chunk? I hope you are planning a retrofit and not dropping in a PnP HID kit. No direct drop in for the shifter on a Classic I have ever seen. Many will fit and operate but not look good doing it.

I actually drove the old girl this week for the first time since, I think, early May. I had to rent a truck yesterday to get some furniture and other larger stuff from my parents' house (move date has now been pushed back to late Sept.) and I didn't want to leave the Impala there overnight so I decided to take the Aurora since it was in the low 70s and the place was only a few minutes away. My gamble paid off and I got away without a low oil pressure warning, although I came close on the way over yesterday since I took the long way around in order to find the place. Coming back this morning, I was able to take a little more direct route that had fewer stoplights. The car ran a little ragged for the first 20 seconds or so after I cranked it up yesterday but then it evened out and ran fine. The check engine light is still on and I have no way to scan codes with that darned OBD 1.5 system. Oddly enough, I wasn't even tempted to take the car for any additional exercise while I had it out. The thought briefly entered my mind to go out somewhere and get some breakfast but it was dismissed almost immediately and I drove home, parked the car back at the bottom of the driveway, pulled the Impala in behind it, and went inside to fix myself some bacon and eggs. My enthusiasm for my Aurora is seriously waning.

Definitely not using a kit on the beast, I work with similar stuff a lot (Engineer by trade) so while these car's are absolutely perfect in almost every way of the two major issues one is not a problem (Electrical), now the short head bolts on an aluminum block V8, that one makes me paranoid a bit about longevity despite being in great condition. I'm seriously thinking a wiring overhaul, new fuse box's, higher capacity relays, power conditioning and redundant breakers. Simplyfying what I can and re-routing what's exposed to common leaks while touching up some strange issues. Luckily have my hands on limitless super high grade electrical components (everything imaginable). Might be the hardest diy project I've ever done but I can tackle the lighting (Front + read center), update the interior lighting for a under-seat very light glow while driving (extremely low). Breaking out the over-ride for the fans to a on/off, low, hight set while also re-routing the DRL, Window, Mirror, Seat (everything driver side door) to center console where the Stereo is. Replace the massive old skool 90s LL Cool J deck with a 1 din pop out screen. Probably end up doing it late fall... have it ready for spring. Can't express my hatred of the electrical design in this car, whoemever handled that portion of the project was either a) drunk, b) an jerk or c) all the above.

Got rear-ended while sitting at a stop sign, by a priest in a Suburban. Said he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. Slammed into me at about 50 MPH. I've got no fog lights in the back, and my trunk is about 2 inches shorter. Amazingly, it still has it's tail lights, and still drives real nice, but is effectively totaled. I'm certainly no longer proud of what a 'looker' it is. So the first pix I'll be posting won't be with it all waxed-out to a Concourse shine. Instead, they'll show how well this thing can take a hit. I feel all roughed up, like I was in a barroom brawl. I'd have been in the hospital if I didn't have limited tort insurance coverage. Got home, called the insurance company, and I have full tort now.

Sorry to hear that, hope you're OK...
Never understood how the driver at fault gets a pass on personal injury liability based on a choice the victim made insuring their car. And I thought SC auto insurance law was screwy, haha!
His insurance will have to pay for the car, right?

Yeah, but it's an uphill battle when your car only Bluebooks at $2400 MAX, despite the fact that you're not likely to find a nice one for that price. I just got lucky, and got mine from a dealer who knew nothing about the car, and just priced it according to the Blue Book. I see them selling in the condition mine was in, generally going for 2400-6200 from dealers. Private party usually go for book value, but they are few and far between. Seems if most private buyers just look up the Blue Book, and have no idea that people who really want them will pay more.

Not today, but Friday did the dreaded cam cover gaskets. Pretty straight forward, just a lot of unrelated part removal. Did the water pump belt and tensioner while I was at it. A little sage advice: be sure you reconnect your spark plug wires correctly before starting the car, and you will avoid heart attack haha. On the plus side, I DID always wonder what would happen if I did that....now I know.

Do you see what I did here? Yep! A few have added the rear side marker functionality to the 2G. Worthwhile mod IMO!

I looked at it up on the lift, then looked at the engine/tranny cradle on the floor and wept tears of joy as my baby was getting fixed.

Anyone know of an active forum member who's done forced induction? Thinking 15psi Also, as an Engineer by trade I think I figured out a dummies guide to the 1stgen rear panel lighting you'll live it when. I test it out if it works as expected

I test it out if it works as expected I have been wanting to do this with my replacement as it's still sitting in the garage. Isn't it just wiring up off the break lights, or will the fuse pop?

Dropped new AGM battery in, today... Nearly 3 weeks after O'Reilly's battery crapped out on me. It really feels good, to be driving my car again.
It is/was suspiciously labeled. I think my new hobby is going to be: stabbing my car dealer's voodoo doll. It might not do a thing to him, but I will feel SO much better

My starter gave up the ghost, 25 miles from home, last week. (On a weekend I had planned to go through, cleaning & adding grounds.) $370 to replace. I could have done myself, I think, for 1/2 that --but, I figured saving the aggravation of fooling with trailer +tearing into manifold was worth it. Drove home & 1 trip to work. Oil pressure sensor appears to have died, car now 3 blocks from home. :/
It begins to feel like I should just buy a tow dolly, pull it everywhere I go & park the car on it, whenever I need to stop somewhere... The joys of having purchased an older used car.

With temperatures hovering in the 60s most of the day and a day off from work, I decided to get the Aurora out of the driveway for the first time in several months. The car has had a dead battery since about August and I finally put the charger on it a few days ago. It cranked right up and so I decided to blow the cobwebs out of the exhaust and drive it to the pharmacy to pick up some prescriptions. Once I'd doe that, I decided instead of turning left to go home, I'd turn right and head for the highway, the first time that car's been over about 40mph in at least six months. Despite all the problems I've been having with oil pressure, the car did great at highway speeds, maintaining between 30 and 40 psi. It was a beautiful afternoon with the sunroof open and Bob Weir's new CD "Blue Mountain" playing, so I just kept going and going, crossed the line into Virginia and kept going until I hit the first stoplight. Oil pressure fell off but maintained just enough to keep the alarms from going off so I decided to turn around at the next light and head home and successfully avoided any LOP warnings until I got back to town, then I got one at every traffic light. When I pulled back in the driveway, the CD was just finishing the final track for the second time, so I'd had the car on the road for almost an hour and a half. With the weather cooling down again, I guess it's time to change the oil, put in some fresh 10w40 (yeah, it's a kluge but it does help) and start driving it a little. All in all, it felt good bonding with an old friend again.

After spending months, looking for OEM-like replacement climate-control knobs, unable to find any for less than $13 each [eBay --you suck!], I bought/installed 2 of these Radioshack bad-boys: (Obviously, the OEM model is on the right, the 'Shack model on the left.) $2.50 each (shipped). They are 1 1/2" inch potentiometer knobs, with a brass hub/screw, to mount to the switch axle. They are 1/8-1/4" smaller diameter than I'd like, & have to be screwed on spaced from the console face ---but they work. They also don't look too bad, although the white mark not matching up to the indicator lights is a little goofy. FYI, you can't see from this pic, but the knobs have a tapered back-side edge, making the whole thing larger diameter than the main knob. If 1 5/8" size knob was an available size, I would have bought those, cut that edge off, & had a nearly seemless fitting replacement knob. I'd been 7 months with just 1 knob, which was broken. I refuse to pay that much for something that GM prolly spent $5 for a box of 10,000. I've also been going through, cleaning ground connections, added 1, planning to add 2 more. (My company has us on max OT, through Jan 1.) My car has developed the dreaded "no oil pressure, below 1000 rpm, once the engine is warm" problem. I have replaced the oil pressure sensor, & I guess my next attempt will be 20w40 or 20w50. The 20 quarts of oil fix, just doesn't sound like my car, to me...

Took the 20s off and put the 2G 17" alloys on for winter if I feel the need to drive the '96. Well, after nearly 2 years of hibernation (due to a random misfire problem fixed this spring/buying an SUV) I took her to the car wash and cleaned her up nice. Sprayed her down with Duragloss Auquawax 951, wiped it off and POW!!! Sexy as heck I am a fan of just about every duragloss product. I get about 50% through a buddy but I'd still pay full price for their product.

Painted the Engine cover. It was lookin' pretty rough so I brought it inside and scrubbed the old silver off of it and repainted it. I may later on take some black paint and paint the letters on it.

Even the youngest Aurora is going on fourteen years old. Most these days come to find a solution to a problem. Then don't come back until the next problem or never.

Got the windshield replaced because it had a crack and needs to pass inspection. Then on the way home it overheated! So mad. The fans stopped working and there was no coolant. I drove it about 8-10 miles just under 250 degrees because I couldn't see the gauge. So my light problem is back but has changed, and I have the added overheating issue. Now I'm trying to track down a potential coolant leak and/or find out if it has blown HGs!!! Going to drain the oil and look for liquid. The Aurora gods are so cruel.
