Paulaurora.......Do not waste 1 second with the analog Onstar. Go to the Onstar FMV (For My Vehicle) mirror. The only thing that you will not have compared to the old analog Onstar will be door unlocking. If you can DIY, it's a simple job. Just remove the factory Onstar mirror & put the Onstar FMV mirror on in its place. Then there are only three wires to connect......ignition, battery & ground. You can use the wiring for the old system for that. For the availability of the Onstar FMV mirror, look for it on Google. There are many sources for it. EDIT: Go to a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/293/293SMLFTKT.PDF for the installation instructions. And ignore the calibration & registration instructions. They are complete gibberish. To register, press the blue button, tell the Onstar service rep that you want to register & answer all their questions.

1. Different system. 2. The FMV does not auto dim. 3. The rain sensor does not have to be removed. It has its own wiring separate from the mirror.

In the past, OnStar would cover the cost of the upgrade when you signed up for 1 year of service. I don't know if they still do the upgrades. But it was available for the 2nd gen, I had mine done.
I'd go that route before replacing the mirror, losing features, and paying $300 for the privilege.
If I recall, Marc's car didn't have OnStar from the factory.

Right. My Aurora was built on 6/28/2000. Onstar was made standard equipment a few weeks later, on 7/17/2000. I always wanted Onstar, and when the Onstar FMV mirror went on the market, I grabbed it immediately!

but "Aurora40" what features you have with the onstar exept like opening the doors crash feature and gps location of the car? My mirror still auto-dims, and it still has a compass heading displayed in it. The FMV mirror does not do these. Plus my mirror is normal sized, not super thick. The digital upgrade did result in outgoing calls showing the dialed number on the DIC. It does not work like caller-id, but if you speak the number, it's nice to get instant confirmation that your voice was interpreted correctly.

Yes they can do remote diagnosis when your check engine light is on.
No you can not use the phone app to see your fuel level or remote start the car.

Anyone know how to totally disconnect the OnStar system.....Recent news shows OnStar will track and log where your vehicle is/has been and speeds even if you have cancelled your service. I'm no tin foil hat cook, but I really don't like the "big brother" feeling of this...So, back to my question, where is the box to take out? Thanks.

recently I've had theft system fault messages appear on my information panel. when they appear my car will not start. 2001 aurora 3.5l anyway 5 days ago I drove my car about 45 miles parked and turned off the car. when I tried to leave later that message plus battery saver came on, and car wouldn't start. completely killed my battery. I checked relays buses fuses, bought a brand new batter, tried both the black key and the valet key,and still nothing. All my car does is turn over but never starts, no fuel no spark nothing. I am assuming my anti theft system has gone wild again. the crank shaft position sensor has been changed, six months ago. I am told that if I go thru the instrument cluster to the message center there is a theft module. but cannot get cluster off. please any suggestions as why the new battery i just bought has been drained, and why my ignition wont recognize my keys would be appreciated

You need to read codes for me when i got this message i had short in purge solenoid wire that was a exposed and caused the issue. The passlock sensor in the ignition lock cylinder may fail causing an anti-theft system fault and a no start condition. What you can try to do is reset the system but leaving the key in under ON position for 11 minutes not less than 10 min. Than turn it off and than try to start again.

Hello. my 2001 Aurora has an onstar mirror. I am a second owner of the car, the onstar isnt active but I believe it may be causing my FREQUENT theft system fault. How do I DISABLE onstar security?

I dont think onsatr is carousing the issue but the module is located in the trunk on the right side behind the cover just unplug all the wires from it. Some cars had 2 boxes than unplug them both.
