...and the other three on banana peels... ultimately the head gasket leak rendered the motor useless. And to add insult to injury the pearl white paint is coming off in sheets. There's a '98 Riv in town that looks just like it. Nice paint process GM. Kind of like the "pre-rusted" steel of the mid 70's. Anyway,I'd really prefer to save the car but it's going to take some major work. As far as the motor is concerned I'm thinking of a 4.6 swap. Does the donor need to be a '98 for the best/easiest swap? As for the paint? The primer is still sticking but somehow I don't trust it,ya know? So,wadaya think? Any help is appreciated. Thx.

You can fix the motor for about a grand yourself or find a shop to repair it for about twice that. Buy a 4.6 and you don't know if it's ever been overheated, might have the same issue, might not. If your commute is short (like 3 miles) you can drain the coolant and drive it with no ill effects as long as you don't let her get too hot. GM claims you can drive up to 50 miles or so without coolant.

I would fix it. Dan is right about the white diamond paint. A powerwasher has been known to take it off sheets at a time.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm leaning towards a 4.6,but not without doing all I can to try to determine the health of the motor. If it's at all possible I'd like to find out who owned it prior to it being salvaged. Considering who would generally be buying a Cadillac I think the odds are better that a 4.6 would have been taken better care of. It's a crap shoot anyway sooooo...........lock and load! I found a retired former Caddy mechanic who is willing to do the swap very reasonably. Then I'll tackle stripping it down to bare steel in prep for some fresh pearl white. ...and maybe some very subtle ghost flames....and a modestly disguised Pro Stock hood scoop...yeah,that's the ticket!

It's a long story. A bad water pump, leaking radiator and a measure of procrastination led to the meltdown. FWIW,SteelSeal worked...for a while but began to fail under WOT runs... ;D. IMO I think it would have left the car "servicable" as long as you stayed out of the throttle, which wasn't an option as far as I'm concerned! So,it looks like it's gonna be a 4.6.

Mine had a leaky radiator combined with a non-functioning coolant level switch. A conscientious driver could have kept it running for years, but my ex wasn't one of those. Lucky for me, otherwise she'd still be driving it and I'd have another piece of crap.
