Hey everyone, just today I ripped out the center console to clean everything. When I had it out I noticed there were two bulbs underneath...one for the orange gear indicator and another towards the front with this little blue rubber boot over the bulb. They never worked in the past so I didn't even know they were there. I went to the store, bought two new bulbs, and they still don't work. Any suggestions?

The wiring is probably broken. Common issue. You probably would have noticed it but they may be wrapped up still in electrical tape. The wiring in mine were fixed once before I got in there. Whoever repaired obviously didn't know how to solder haha.
BTW if you are flexible and not a 'big' dude(not trying to offend anyone) you can remove the driver side kick panel and reach both bulbs!

Hey, gotta ask the obvious things too. See the white wiring? thats White cloth electrical tape covering the repaired wires for the harness. Most common to break is the wiring to the button "power/normal" and the orange indicator for the shifter because theyre moving wires. Check for wire breaks in your harness

thanks sall and nelson. Nelson, You're saying that the wires from the shifter go to the orange indicator?

Yes, in my pic you can see the main part of the harness runs in the middle, then 2 wires branch off for the orange indicator which moves with the shifter to tell you what gear your in. The bulb with the blue cover stays put at the top of the indicator

Also the shift indicator bulb runs off the power from the passenger side cigarette lighter. There is a fuse for that I believe called acc cig lighter or something of the like. I believe its a 20amp its in the fuse panel on the side of the dash. Mine was blown which was why ut wasn't working for me.

It powers PRNDL Indicator and the accessory outlet.

Ask me how I know I blew the same fuse when installing CarPC accessory. I use that circuit to power USB relay board. Any device that would have used the AUX port can now be charged or powered through USB hub in center console. As mentioned earlier, you can change the bulb without removing the console. I just did this because after 2 years the cheap T5 LED blew out and I'm already replacing everything anyways. So, I reach in from under the console through the driver side kick panel and remove the bulb socket and run the socket through the ashtray lamp cavity where I can get two hands on it to pull the bulb. My dexterity isn't good enough to hold and pull lthe bulb out with one hand.... A little dirty but anyways... easy peezy... The Red Momentary Push button is push button ignition!!! Not really it's emergency cut-off switch for CarPC barring any issues needing immediate shutdown. I've done this twice since fixing the wiring. First time incan burned out again second time cheap PnP LED burned out. Also remember when testing that PRNDL indicator is only illuminated with ignition in RUN.

Nice! haha, I never knew that the indicator ran off of the lighter until I actually had the console apart and was testing wires

I guess they did it because there really isn't another circuit hot in run in that area other than Radio harness.

Exactly, instead of running a whole nother circuit for it, they ran it off something that would be hot in run anyways

I'm confused lol, is the light connected to the aux fuse or the lighter fuse?

I'm confused lol, is the light connected to the aux fuse or the lighter fuse? It is connected to AUX circuit in IP fuse box 20A fuse. RCA is confusing AUX port with a cigarette lighter. The AUX port is slightly larger and is on the right side of the ashtray compartment, lighter is on the left. IRRC. The back door lighters and front lighter are on a different 25A CLTR fuse.

Right, the cigarette lighters have full time power, while the AUX port, like the gear shift indicator light, is switched with the ignition. For this reason, I run the power to my center console light off the cigarette lighter circuit so I can have light in my center console without having the car on.

where is the fuse for this?

The fuses are located under the rear seat. There are fuse schematics on the fuse box covers in there. Look for the AUX fuse.

The AUX and C/LTR(Lighters) fuses are in the IP fuse block(driver side door jamb area).

Danget, you're right. I've never had a car with so many darn fuse boxes. What do we have, four?

Haha yeah and one on the steering column with a 2A fuse. That's just an in-line fuse holder though.

This is the "first" project for my new-to-me '97. Dove into the console today and as it turns out, not only do I have broken wires, but they're both broken flush at the socket AND the tiny tabs that hold the socket to the shift indicator are both snapped off (in the pic it's just sitting there loose). Lucky me. Anyone else ran into this? I think someone in a old post used tape to secure the bare bulb inside the indicator. Might try that for now until I can find another socket that will work. Also noticed the entire harness for the console must've been replaced at some point - it has a date code of 6/2/1999 on a tag near the main connector.
