Hey Everyone
So thankful I came upon this site. I have been prowling the forums for the past couple months trying to get ideas for my next tire purchase for the classic. I have narrowed it down to these two. (BFGoodrich Advantage T/A and Michelin Primacy MXV4) I have read on tire forum that their are mixed opinions on these. I would like to get further opinions from anyone who has owned or ran these particular tires.
Thanks

First - welcome!
I don't have experience with those particular models but have run Michelins on a few different vehicles and have been EXTREMELY pleased. I have Michelin Hydroedges on my '97 and they are great (quiet, good handling). They came with the car when I bought it so can't compare them to anything else on the 'rora. I do notice they are rated for long tread life - something like 80K - so we'll see. They are nearly new right now.
I got 70K out of two sets of Michelin Cross Terrains on my Envoy and they were very quiet. In my book, 70K on an SUV is pretty darn good. I 'stepped down' to Goodyears now and they are a tad noisier.
All told, I've been happy anytime I've run Michelins and they seem to be ranked highly in tire comparisons so personally I'd lean that way.
Also, FYI - the Aurora seems sensitive to tire balancing so make sure whoever mounts your new tires does a thorough job, ideally with a road force balancer.

Both are made by Michelin.
If all you can afford are the BFG's, get them, but the Primacy's are a far better tire. Their predecessors, the Energy MXV4's put in 80,000+ on my Aurora and are now doing duty on Intrigue 2. Should get 20,000 or more out of them yet... I have a set of Primacy's on the Aurora and they are even better than the Energys...

bman,
I've got the General Altimax HP on my classic, but I have used the Michelin Primacy MXV4 on other cars.
The Michelins are very comfortable as far as noise and ride. I'm pleased with them, and would use them again.

rorafan I was thinking about buying the tires at Discount Tireand then having them roadforce balance and aligned at the Cadillac dealer down the street. My concern is I was hearing issues with the Michelins Primacy's on the Honda Accord V6 I own, with the steering wheels shuttering. (There is aforum about the Honda's having the same issue with the Michelin's) I bought Kuhmo KH17 for it. Its fine now. ntrenn/kbpickle Thanks, I'm leaning more towards the Michelin's. wireless Planning to buy them from Discount. Been hearing horror stories from Sears about damaged wheels. Would it be worth getting Michelin HydroEdge? We really been getting sporadic rain here in California Everyone I don't want to lose my comfortable ride, this is my weekend road car to Vegas and San Diego

It's up to you - The only thing I've heard about them is that you have to get them rotated on a strict schedule (every 5k miles.. which is when I usually rotate mine so it wasnt a problem).
Other than that - silent on the road, no noise. I could cruise at 115mph and not have a single stutter - smooth as butter.
I think it's worth the extra money..

I rotate my tires every 20,000 miles whether they need it or not.

My parents got me in the habit of getting mine rotated every 5k - or every oil change.. Plus, they're free since I buy my stuff at discount tire

I've got a set of Goodyear Assurance Comfort-tred on mine currently, but it was a VERY close decision between the Goodyear and the Michelin MXV4's after spending a great deal of time checking on here and looking at ratings and reviews on tirerack.com. I did have one tire replaced that was an MXV4 on my previous set of tires. But unfortunately that's not enough to base any claim of how it handled since my others were Goodyears.
The main reason that I went with the Goodyear's was that after seeing both the Goodyear Assurance Comfort-tred and an MXV4 on my car, I just preferred the way the Goodyear looked. However, If I recall the MXV4 were the only tire that beat the Goodyear Assurance Comfortred in reviews/ratings on tirerack, so it's close but MXV4's have been rated very quiet, and great traction in thick and thin.
Also, I had that shudder with the car and steering wheel when I bought my car, but often that can be a bad balance depending on the speed that it's happening at. I had them balanced at a tire shop and for $32 (tire balance cost) the freeway shudder was gone for good. Nothing wrong with the tires or tie rods or steering like I had been told, just the wrong weights on the rims.
Good luck! Let us know what you go with.

I was thinking about buying the tires at Discount Tireand then having them roadforce balance and aligned at the Cadillac dealer down the street. Sounds like a plan. Most GM dealers around here use a roadforce balancer, and I would think a Cadillac shop would def. have one (can try checking here: www.gsp9700.com/search/findgsp9700.cfm ). Personally I have not had much luck with balancing done outside of a dealer.... Also, my local Buick/GMC dealer will match tire prices from other shops and will special order if needed - might not hurt to check into that and maybe get everything done at one place?

you can go to the Hunter website and put in your zip code and it returns all the locations of the road force balance machines. Big-O tires near me has one.

jeremy1980 do have any closer shots of the tires on your ride? I've got all Goodyears on now, fairly new. No pics of the current set, but I'll take a couple/few with my phone this afternoon and post them this evening. I don't believe I have any that show the MXV4 that I had before I replaced them all, but I'll see if I can zoom in well if any of the older pics show that corner. Otherwise another poster posted an MXV4 pic that looks just like mine did. The main difference is the sidewall and closer to where the tread starts, I think the GY Assurance Comforttred has a slightly more rugged look. You can buy the plain GY Assurance as that can save some money, I've heard good things of those also. But on luxury vehicles where quiet ride is ideal you'll see more Comfortreds on the Aurora's and Cadillacs.

Here the pics I said I would get for you, keep in mind they've got tire shine gel on them, so they'll shine more than they'd usually look. Sorry for the delay, didn't have a chance to post last night. If you look at the pics of the MXV4's that oldwino and wireless posted, the Michelins look nice but the Goodyears just seem to have more ridges in the mid-sidewall. Probably the best way I can explain it. Good luck with your purchase!

You're welcome, but sorry for making the decision harder for you. I also have a tough time with picking something also; whether it be tires, shoes, or a new wet dry vac that I keep researching reviews on. It is dark green, but I don't know if I'd call it's metallic or not. At the bottom of my posts there's a cardomain link with photos of soon after I bought it about six or seven years ago. Can't remember what type of tires those were on it then, but that duller look is closer to how any of them look when they're not shined up. I probably should've taken pics without the gel on them. It does ride well, and I've been complimented on the smooth ride of the car many times; however, most of that I'd give credit to the engineers at GM for our suspension. Handles well in light or even deep snow, although that won't be a concern for you. But those MXV4's are reviewed incredibly well in all those areas as well (somewhat better even) so I don't want to tip the scale too much for you. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't think twice about purchasing the MXV4's, but if you eagle eye both the GY's just have a little more rugged look on the edge of the tread part and a slight difference in the sidewall pattern. Whether that's good or bad is up to you. Good luck! And feel free to reply or PM me if you have any other questions or want other pics of mine.

I almost forgot, if you haven't yet it might help you to go to a tire shop to look at what you've narrowed it down to. At least that would help with the looks area of the decision. Naturally their sales people will try to talk you into their favorite brand (which coincidentally will be on the sign outside the shop, lol), but seeing them in person back to back up close is helpful.

So, I finally made a decision. I bought (for now 2 tires )the Yokohama YK580s. They fit my budget and were comparable to the Michelin's and GYs. So far I have noticed they are really quiet. I will pickup the other (2) on Saturday. The car will be aligned the same day at a Buick dealer. Thanks to everyone for the help in my decision. Below are a few pics of them. I will take more when I get all four. BTW, let me know if this pics are too big. I will change up the next time around.
