We never experimented with it, bob did it but he has a 95 and seeing as you have a 98 too I'd assume you and I are in the same boat (ribbon cable for cd player and different wires for the tape deck than the 95 has

Right. I opened my '98s radio today and yep flat ribbon cable on disc player. Same cassette wiring as RCAs too. I pitched the tape and disc player in trash. Disc player wouldn't eject and made horrid sound. I only need the main board anyhow. Rob, did you ever check to see if your '98 has the disc changer wiring? My '98 has it with no disc changer..

You know I never looked. The wiring in the trunk where the changer would be you mean? If so I believe the connector is there, I can swear I recall seeing it when I changed out my antenna

Yeah the wiring for the changer. If so that module would work for you. Although you can get a nice double din for another 100 bucks. I am sure there are cheaper ones out there though <$60. Or use the fm modulator(not transmitter) just as easy and cheaper.

Its there. Pretty sure that was 96-97+ came with the changer harness.

Nah, my '96 has no harness for the changer but the 98 does. Neither have disc changer as factory option.

I know my 99 had it, as i added it to the stock system, then upgraded to the Bose system and migrated the entire harness

Hey guys!! I was successful in getting my 98 non-Bose and non-changer radio to work with a aux in using the tape deck. Just follow Nelson's instructions, just use the tape deck, and just use the smaller connector. To see how to get to the tape deck see: aurorah.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Audio&action=display&thread=15183 . On the smaller connector go to the side opposite the dark blue wire. The last three white wires are what we need, but be careful, these wires are prone to breaking at the connector! I broke my left audio one and had to solder it to the joint on the board. Anyways, the last three white wires from left to right are left, ground, and right. Follow the rest of Nelson's instructions and install. I mounted mine in the console, and even have it switching between aux and tape. Sound quality is vastly improved!!! Also, I chopped of a little bit of my cassette door so that it would fully close with a cassette in there. To eject, stick your finger in to open it up and eject. I ripped off the cord to my cassette adapter tape and use that as a dummy tape. 98redaurora I will get some pictures up. Nelson - The harness your referring to is a port on the back, that the cd changer hooks into, is it not? If so, don't have one :/

Go for it! Well worth it. My stock speakers sound pretty decent now! I used cat 5 works great! Wires are a good size to work with...

I'm talking about the harness that runs to the trunk for the changer.

Hey guys!! I was successful in getting my 98 non-Bose and non-changer radio to work with a aux in using the tape deck. Well done! Exactly, so why bother making it switch back to tape? What happens if you forget to hold the door open? Seems like a bad idea.

Thanks!! I don't understand what you mean. I just wanted it to switch tape if I ever wanted to use a regular tape. I chopped part of the door off, since 99% of the time, I will be using a dummy tape, and didn't want the door to be partly open and ruin the clean look. If you forget to open the door, the tape hits the door makes a sort of ticking noise and goes back in. At which point I open the door and allow it to exit.

Finished mine last night, you were right about those wires 98red....i got it all together ready to go and sound decided to only play from the left side pulled apart the radio again to see the wire pulled out of the connector! I thought i was done but the i realized that the other side of the wires (where the tape player connects) has the exact same connector, so i flipped it around (connecting the non-broken side to the board and the broken side to the tape player). The result of that is the jack works but no more sound from the tape player (which didn't matter anyway). I mounted the jack inside the ash tray area. Couple of amendments to the thread. #1 the first wire from the left is actually the right, the middle the ground and the left is the third white wire from the left. #2 you don't need to remove the face plate to get to the cassette player, just the one screw and pry up from the back. All in all I'm happy with the results, just probably need a new tape player mine never seemed to like tapes. Also, an fyi disconnecting either connector fully won't fool the radio into thinking it has a tape in it

Are you sure about that? I tested my wiring when was assembling it, and everything was correct.. I could be wrong though, when I typed it, but I'm thing I was correct. Run a cassette adapter for tape left and right channels, and maybe play a sound test from youtube through your jack. Also, here are some pictures of the finished product. I had a hard time soldering the tiny wires.. However, the seem to hold fine.

I know for sure because one wire was disconnected when i first tested it and sound was playing out of one side. My tape player has since taken a crap though so looks like I'm back to square one

Got the "E13" Message as explained in This LinkThe player now refuses to eject or play the tape. The radio recognizes a tape is in there (as evidenced by the symbol on the display) but will not give any other response as far as the tape player goes.

Thinking about going aftermarket now haha, since my tape player is broken, and especially after installing one in my brothers car and seeing how well it works in there with this module he got for the steering wheel controls

Do it, man! I don't have the seek/tune controls but I have the fan/temp ones back with the stock radio under the dash mod. Aftermarket radio is totally worth it.

Do the aftermarket radio steering wheel control modules, retain the temp controls as well as seek/tune?
|
|
|
Post by sall on Jan 18, 2013 9:09:09 GMT -6
The modules do everything *except* temp/fan controls/date on the DIC, but you can piggy back OEM radio to keep those functions. I re-confirmed that some years ago. Howto in the stickies. Aftermarket only way to go. CarPC FTW lol. I do some can control almost everything though but definitely not the date dic feature.

The module has the date in it too? I know for sure that it does the fan and the radio. I was thinking I would still have to connect the stock H/U under the dash to retain the date.
As far as carPC goes, probably not going to be that in-depth haha. I just want something with iPod integration. Probably wont even be double din. Although I really can't stand how poorly aftermarket fits in these cars unless you do a lot of finangling. It fit perfect in my brohters chrysler. It almost looks stock

Stock look is good! That's what you want.
Using the stock head unit for date and hvac controls is what I chose simply because all it cost me was my old factory unit and 15-20 minutes of splicing to make it work properly. Last time I checked on it those aftermarket steering control modules were pretty expensive. It was for my HU at the time, at least. Anything is more expensive than free. ;D

Sorry Rob I left out the word *except* lol. Some modules do it All though! Metra ASWC module is pretty inexpensive $45 shipped. I can't live without all the buttons. JoyCon for CarPC saved the day for me. I can map any of the audio buttons to do anything(open application, switch songs, mute, etc.) separate functions for double pressing button quickly too. Free for fan/temp/date but not volume, etc. Like I said can't live without those buttons. ;D Metra does ALL(except date) functions BTW. You have to have a compatible head unit though So choose wisely.
