My email on this account is one that I lost years ago, I would like to change it to my current email but have heard horror stories about not being able to get back into your account or other bad consequences.
So if I change it, I would like to have some backup, tell me what to do.

I haven't heard this? Not impossible though. When this has happened before we have deleted the account entirely (after we are contacted and provided with some form of identity confirmation to ensure it is the person who had the account) and then the person can re-register the account with a new email. you lose all your settings and bookmarks, but we can still reinstate your post count (and staff position... maybe. ;D) manually. There are ways around it, so don't fret!

You are talking crazy, but, I sure would hate to lose all my pms, I could copy all my bookmarks and save them.

Randy did you ever change your e-mail? I really don't think any member should have a problem inputting a new e-mail address. IIRC the horror stories you mentioned are usually due to a member having their registration under old e-mail accounts that they can no longer access. For instance, they registered under account #1, changed at some point to account #2, don't have access to either account anymore, re-registered under account #3, and now we're trying to figure out how to get everything lined back up. That was the last issue of this nature that was posed to staff. A straight e-mail change should not be a problem. Jot down your post count and bookmarks as a backup if desired.
