As some of you may have seen in the rim/lowering thread the next thing I would like to do to my '96 is getting the rear wheel flush with the fenders. It looks weird when I look at it... getting picky about things to do. With my aftermarket wheels/tires the fronts are flush with fenders. However the rear still leaves much to be desired. It is much better than stock but still not flush. OEM 16x7" +51mm Offset 235/60-16s: Set into fender about 1". LOL it's ridiculousAftermarket 20x8.5" +45 255/35-20s: Set into fender about 0.5".So that being said. How do other cars get away with sitting flush without throwing the tire into the fender? With the lowering springs on they are obviously a higher spring rate I'm just not sure what's going to happen. If that would even happen... The spacers aren't 'cheap'. I realize they are a bit harder on the hubs too. However the heavier wheels aren't helping much with that either. If I end up having to replace the hub assemblies at some point so be it. They are OEM originals... I will be having the spacers custom machined to be hubcentric to OEM hub AND hubcentric to the aftermarket wheels for a perfect fit. These aren't spacers with extra lugs on them. The other option is to make a spacer for the hub assembly itself, but regardless the same question remains. My plan is to take a rear wheel off and stack some washers on the lug studs. Guess and check until wheel/tire sits flush with fender. Then jostle the suspension up and down and see if it the wheel/tire hit the fender. Just wanting to hear some thoughts or opinions or if anyone knows if it WILL bottom out?! That's my concern...

...So that being said. How do other cars get away with sitting flush without throwing the tire into the fender? ...Just wanting to hear some thoughts or opinions or if anyone knows if it WILL bottom out?! That's my concern... Custom shock bump stops? That's an idea. I looked closely last night. Jumped and down on the trunk lip violently. It seems the way it is now if anything was going to happen it would have already happened. The side wall would be hitting the fender on the inside where the lip is due to the rear camber and current wheel offset. I am debating spacing the the hub itself out and not the using the hubcentric spacers... still not sure. These will be bit easier to machine and not hard on the hubs... I got the idea from here.0.5" Hub spacer will look like this crappy paint drawing: And mount between #36 and #37 in this diagram: Of course will need longer studs for hub and caliper mounting. So, if one were interested they could space out their stock wheels too.

Okay continuing my research. Talking to brick walls. Leaving this info here for future member or to whom it may concern I reached back in ACNA history and found a member or three running 18x7" +35 Offset with 255/45-18s. Comparing that wheel/tire package with mine... They stick out 0.4"(10mm) further than my current wheel/tire package. So, this let's me know that extra 0.4" inches on stock ride height is A okay. Almost the full 0.5" I wanted. My rear springs are stiffer(obviously) than stock springs by almost 60lbs. to keep from bottoming out. So, that being said I really think I can swing a 10mm or 11mm spacer... Risk it or forget it? :/

The car looks fine now, but i can relate to wanting it as flush as possible. My rims are 7" or 7.5" wide rather than 8 or 8.5 so im pretty sure mine are in even further than yours. I say go for it, they can always be removed but its your call.

Well, I am coming down the home stretch on things to do on this vehicle. I am looking to perfect little details. Getting more picky as it goes.

I would live with the 1/2" space. but i know feel you on saying its coming down to nip picking/ details!

It's all about the details at this point to me. I probably won't be happy until I do it.
+35 offset would have been fine in the rear with the 255/35-20s but not in front. Would have stuck out. Couldn't justify buying staggered size tire widths for rotation issues. Only option would be side to side rotation then.

That makes perfect sense, good call. Are they symmetrical tires then too, not directionals? That's the way to go. I got the Falken Ziex tires that were directionals and they were a pain. Always unbalanced and you couldn't rotate them properly.

Still debating... If I don't decide before I pull the wheels off for winter it will be a while before getting them next season if I decide too. Couple shots of 'gap'.

Thanks for the humorous image of you jumping up and down in the trunk! I don't really see this gap you speak of due to the angle of your shots. it looks fine to me. like nelson480 said - what no shine on the tails?

Sall, I think they mean tailpipes (exhaust tips). The last pic they're in the shadow of the bumper, but I know they are polished.

Re-visiting this now that the weather is clearing for good(hopefully). I have decided to purchase a 13mm hubcentric wheelspacer. This will effectively give me a +32mm offset. Which should bring the rear wheels/tires as flush as possible without rolling fenders. To account for the extra 13mm the lug studs must also be replaced. I purchased those a few days ago to the tune of $10.

I have had the spacers for a few days now and the extended lug studs. I had hopes of getting the project done this weekend too, but it did not happen unfortunately.

Fancy Wheel Stud Remover: C-Clamp with 3/4" and 5/8" Sockets Tool Set in Place: Just crank until it pops. You will now New Studs 1/2" Longer to Compensate for 13mm Spacer: Press in New Stud: Use 1/2" I.D. washers stacked with 12x1.5mm nut. Tighten until seated. You may apply some lube for easier application. Extended Studs Pressed In: Wheel Spacer Installed: Perfect Fit! Wheel/Tire Back On: I would have liked to have cleaned up a bit more and sprayed some black on visible surfaces. Another day another project... Will post some pictures tomorrow. It is too late for any good pictures. Stance is nice!

Have ya had it on the road yet?
While I like to have my wheel in my well, I admire you for all that math you have done to figure this out.

Have ya had it on the road yet? While I like to have my wheel in my well, I admire you for all that math you have done to figure this out. They do not stick out of the body. I took it for a spin last night but nothing spirited until today. Everything seems to be just fine no tire rubbing! It was exactly what I was going for! Looks great and it seemed to improve handling a slight bit... however maybe that's just my imagination! Will get some more pictures later. In a re-cap I now have a +32mm offset in the rear. 20x8.5" +32 Offset w/ 255/35/20 puts the rear wheels 1.1" or 29mm further out! I want a 5mm spacer up front now

I can easily notice the difference from mine, although my rims are 7.5" i believe and probably a different offset. For such a small touch it looks real good.
