Took a nice drive to Quebec over the weekend with the Princess. Being that I haven't had it too long and not sure about the service history, I almost took the train. But when I got to the station, I decided to take a chance and drive it. I didn't realize until this weekend how great this car is on the highway! Here's my report on both ways.
Newmarket to Montreal Distance: 560 km (348 mi) Average Speed Traveled: 134 km/h (83 MPH) Time Departed: 3:30 pm Time Arrived: 8:00 pm Average Fuel Economy: 10.3 L/100 km (22.8 MPG)
Montreal to Newmarket Average Speed Traveled: 132 km/h (82 MPH) Time Departed: 7:00 pm Time Arrived: 11:30 pm Average Fuel Economy: 9.7 L/100 km (24.2 MPG)
Fuel Economy was compromised due to my rush to get there, if I take it easy, I can usually get it down to 29 MPG. But it was definitely a joy to drive there, wish I took the opportunity to take pictures on the way.

What is the optimum cruise control speed to get the best mileage? I noticed when I cruised at 50-70 mph, my instantaneous economy was around 29-33 MPG. As soon as I passed 75 mph, it went up to 23-26 MPG. So my suggestion is around 60-65 MPH. Damn, I love having my DIC!

I've noticed on my 3.5L, that having the car cruise around 108km/h i get the best highway MPG. According to the DIC, a full tank of gas could get me around 950-1000km. Now, the other thing i noticed is, using cruise control and going up hills, kills this count. Which is why i don't use cruise control. I just coast along doing 108km/h, trying not to let the car shift down gears when dealing with hills.

I took my 98 for a 528 mile (264 miles one way) round trip a few weeks ago. Ran 80mph for most of it and got 23 MPG on the way there. On the way back ran about 70 the whole way back and averaged 29 MPG. Pretty dang good for a V8.

23 MPG at 83 MPH is pretty good if you ask me. At 80 MPH in my 4 cylinder CX-7, I'm averaging about 22. Drop it down to 67 though, and I get a smooth average of 32. I made a 1300 mile journey on the east coast in one of my Aurora's of the past. Averaged 30 MPG, even through the mountains. I guess you 3.5 owners don't have the luxury of torque. 4.0's have the ability to climb just about any grade in 4th, without a downshift.
