What are the battery casing even made out of... plastic? Why not kevlar or something...? Or some sort of higher end skid plate for lack of better words. Too much weight? I mean these cars had to pass some pretty strict testing in the first place to be road worthy...

According to this Tesla post, the Model S has a "quarter inch bottom plate": www.teslamotors.com/it_IT/blog/model-s-fire

I get that its a new electric car, but why should a car catching fire in an accident be "big news"

Marc, I saw 2 or 3 of them in one week in the Toronto area earlier this year. This is my dream car right now (I haven't gone 1 day in the last three weeks without reading/watching something about Tesla). If everything "aligns" for me financially, I will buy one in the next 6 months. If I had the cash available now, I would buy one IN A HEARTBEAT.

The Tesla cars are all over Colorado. I see one to two a day. I think all starting companies have issues, especially if the product is in demand. I hope the company makes it and wish they would come with a small more affordable car in a few years. I would be up for one of them in three to four years. For me the car would need to be in $40K-45K. $70K is too much for me. If I could afford $70K, I would not be worrying about the price of gas.

I got a chance to see one up close and personal about a month ago. I could see me behind the wheel of one of those except for the price. I agree that the price is a little bit on the high side.
