Will be swapping the steel trunk for the aluminium version. The 2001 aluminium trunk has such a sleek appearance, compared to the steel one, with its not-so-nice plastic licence bezel. I'm curious to see the weight difference too, though it's not the reason why I am doing the swap.

Are you painting it before you install it? It looks like there's a drastic color difference, unless it's just the lighting in the picture.

Not sure. I want a new paint job for the car before end of summer...

The aluminium trunk lid is 24 pounds including all hardware, etc.
Once I remove the steel trunk lid I will also weight it.

The steel trunk lid came at 40 pounds.
The switch from a steel lid to an aluminium lid is pretty straightforward... there's some thinking that needs to go into the keyholes - 2001 versus 2003 are not exactly the same.
But one thing I completely overlooked was the torsion bar for the trunk lid... the steel torsion bar is really too stiff...given the weight difference... Will need to get the right ones...

I just saw one of these on a 2001 in the bone yard today... with a spoiler no less... and it confused the heck out of me...What is the story with this style deck lid and why does my 2001 have the steel one with the plastic plate thingy? Was it a mid year design change?

You have a 3.5 - only the 4.0 had the aluminium lid in 2001...

Ah...got it. I'm assuming it will still fit?

Only 40 pounds? Wow, thinner gauge I guess. Didn't think of that...
Different torsion bars... Didn't think of that either, it must snap open like a jack-in-the-box!

Based on the aluminium/steel density ratio, I too was expecting around 60 pounds...

I have a 2001 3.5, with the plastic license plate fascia, and it does, in fact, snap open like a jack-in-the box. I have an aluminum trunk lid. I don't know how or why, just like I don't know why the previous owner sanded the clear coat off one of the fenders. Nevertheless, in the world we live in, he did, and I do.
