I still had my screen set to show voltage after my alternator swap while driving in the monsoon today. I noticed when abruptly stopping after driving peacably @ 1400 rpms , 35mph or so I could dive my charge down to 12ish. I believe this to be accurate because I had my defrost on 100% and the change in the fan speed made me look at the dash. This also happened when I accidentally hit a really good puddle. The charge also rose quickly back to 14.2 with no need to break idle and the charging system light did not come on.
Is this pretty common? Is our gauge just that fast I can see any dip in voltage? I don't remember this before in any of my other cars but this alternator is on the bottom where it probably gets more water.
To over describe how my new alternator behaves it generally does GREAT. First time I got it on the highway the charge ran a bit high up to the low 15's then it clicked itself down to 14.4 as if it learned what it was doing. Over 500 miles since then I can get it down to 13.9 with everything and the defrost on sitting in gear. Generally holds 14.2 to 14.4 driving.
Thanks guys.

Never really, but my charging system is not stock. Down in the 12s does not seem normal though. Alternator should not get wet really.

Agreed. Maybe something loses connection when the car goes in the nose down position like them quick stops or the splash shock of the puddle. I do soo much highway driving it could have always been that way and w/o the defrost on full blast or looking at the gauge I am not sure I would notice.
If I go out and start it now it will idle forever @ 14 with everything including the defrost on so something sensitive to motion has to be loose.
I will recheck the quality of my connections. Any likely suspects?

I want to say I've seen mine dip down like you described but only for ~1 second, and it's just like you mentioned...right after coming off the throttle in anticipation for a stop in my case. Can't remember if it was in the 12s but could have been.
I'll have to keep an eye out so you have another example. I do see upper 13s while idling at a light with the headlights, etc. on. Definitely in that range with the A/C or defrost on.
Fwiw, my alternator is a 4 year old GM replacement.

If I have the defrost, brake lights, turn signal, heater etc (a lot of accessories) all on at once then my voltage will drop a little. Sometimes in the lower 13's.

Today cool and dry things worked perfectly. When cool it was 14.2 to 14.4. Once things warmed up 13.9 to 14.2
I didn't really give it the Formula1 treatment though lol.
On a related note its pretty important to me the Oldsmobile runs this week. The charging system in my MarkVIII shot craps. Rock Auto is almost 1/2 price ($80 less) compared to the parts store so I'm mail ordering.
I'm starting to think these gremlins can jump from car to car if they are parked closely enough.

Mine will flicker sometimes if it's cool out and I'm driving at dusk or dawn with the lights on. Usually goeas away when car warms up. I think there was a TSB on it in the past.

After however many weeks, I think my belt likes to slip a little when wet. I have not caught any more voltage problems but once I thought I felt my power steering get a little stiff after splashing through a puddle on the work lot.
NOT bad enough for me to do a tensioner.

According to my GM software there are no TSBs for 95-99 Auroras or G body car for that matter pertaining to the alternator.

2003 voltage drops on cold mornings to 13 then back to 14.5.When really cold goes down to 12.0 and check charging comes on DIC. Changed alternator, belt and still does it only cold. Summer never and once the engine warms up stays at 14.9.

I'd guess that you have a bad thermistor
