Hey all,
I'm back with a really random question: where exactly does the wiring run underneath the headliner in an 01 3.5L? I'm asking because I'm installing a CB radio system in my car this weekend and **prepare yourselves** I need to drill into my roof to allow the coaxial cable to reach the bottom of my stud mount. Now I know this is probably equivalent to some kind of sacrilege to many of you, that I would willingly drill a hole into my roof, but rest assured it will look a heck of a lot better when finished than those tacky exterior mounts with the cable visible outside the car. I never plan on not having at least the stud on the roof so it'll always be covered and sealed in some way.
Anyway, I plan on drilling this hole either right smack dab in the middle or right in front of the third brake light. This of course would depend on if I'd run the risk of drilling into any wiring that leads to that third brake light located beneath the headliner. If so, I could move the placement forward toward the front of the vehicle until this risk is minimized.
So, if anyone knows exactly where any wiring of any kind beneath the headliner is and can suggest a good spot where I won't run the risk of drilling into any wiring please let me know!

Don't do any drilling. Get a through the window antenna which uses transfer boxes, one outside, one inside. See www.amazon.com/Midland-18-258-40-Channel-Glass-Mount-Antenna/dp/B00000K2YV for one. And remember to check the antenna Standing Wave Ratio with an SWR meter, and adjust the length of the antenna as necessary. BTW, I had a CB in a 1972 442 back in the 1970s & 80S. EDIT: Mount the antenna on the rear window, in back of the 3rd brake light.

While I appreciate the link I've already done a bunch of research on the way I want to do this and am pretty set with the roof stud (this is the one I've bought: smile.amazon.com/dp/B007QXKXWE). Those through-the-window mounts are only attached via an adhesive that many reviewers can attest to wearing out and end up losing their entire antenna/mount assembly on the highway. But thanks for the insight! I dont think there is any wires in middle or on roof i know there is some in front but i dont think anything in the middle . Thanks for that info. I mean there has to be some wiring in front of the 3rd brake light right? Does that follow the edge of the roof and not go into the middle of it very much?

You should be able to pop out the third brake light assembly, that way you'd be sure not to hit the wires haha.

I dont think there is wires on top. i think the back light gets power from the liner on back or something. At list when My wife had an aurora with sunroof the headliner was lower so you can see if anything inside and there was no wires in the middle but there was a double sided tape thing to hold the liner to the roof but i dont think its same with cars with no sunroof but i can be wrong.

Thanks again for the replies. I really want to avoid taking off the headliner if possible since I'm really worried I won't be able to put it back properly and as I understand it's a huge pain in general. RCA1186, can I pop out that assembly without removing the headliner or at least dropping it down a bit?

I don't own a 2g, but from what I've seen at the yard that assembly is independent of the headliner, there's doublestick where it connects to the back window I believe and I think two spots on the edges where it clips on. This is all from my memory though haha

I really want to avoid taking off the headliner if possible... Are you gonna drill through it? Not that hard to drop the headliner... Yeah that was the initial plan. Just drill through everything and use a big flat washer on the interior to give it some rigidity. If I think I'll be able to do it easily I guess I could drop the headliner a few inches (if it's much easier than taking it out altogether) and even run the coax to the front of the vehicle out of sight that way. Can anyone give me a quick rundown of how to drop the headliner a bit?

Can anyone give me a quick rundown of how to drop the headliner a bit? Remove/Disconnect Electrical Connectors: Sun Visors Overhead Console CHMSL A, B, and C Pillar Covers Assist Handles Anything else I may have forgotten that even looks like it'll be in the way, haha! Sun visors and assist handles are secured with screws, all others use clips. Don't break the clips when you pull this stuff off! Clear the headliner from the door opening trim strips and gently pull downward.

Is it safe to assume that the headliner would come out through the one of the front doors or the rear doors? I'm asking because I have to drop the headliner myself. The fabric is sagging something fierce. I was going to try and reupholster it with a vinyl material to match the leather for a more custom look...

Hardness detailed on a G2. All wires are around the edge of headliner, bottom of pic (front) top is (rear). All comes down to a hardness clip at the rear pass. Pillar.

I replaced the sunroof on the G2, by replacing the entire unit. The frame for the sunroof assembly fit through the front passenger door, but just barely. The headliner can flex better and you can wedge it through the same door. Reason being, I didn't have a riveting tool nor weld or cutter to do any of the work while mounted in the car. The sunroof is still a trooper after replacement in 2003, and the job was done with common residential shop tools.
