Mrs. Tigger reported that the tach, speedo, temp gauge, fuel gauge, and odometer all at once died on her trip home from work tonight. I go out and start the car, everything worked. Shut it down and restarted just to see... no tach, no speedo. Definitely intermittent.
I'll pull out the manuals and check fuses, wiring, and grounds in the morning. But, has anyone ever had/heard of this?

I have sort of the same issue....only with mine, it's just the tach. i can knock on the dash in front of the tach and it will jump, & sometimes it will work till the next bump.

Thanks for the input guys...
Paul, it still has the stock radio. Is there some connection between the two that I'm unaware of?
MRN65, that sounds more like an internal issue with the cluster. Like a cold solder joint for the tach on the PCB.
Marc, that's what I was thinking as well. Found something in the wiring diagrams that has almost convinced me that is not the case.
Didn't have a lot of time to do physical inspections today, it rained all morning. Took that time to pull out the FSM and read wiring diagrams...
Looks like the cluster gets power from both battery and ignition voltage but uses the same ground. I'm thinking the ground is okay since the backlights and indicator lights worked when the gauges shut down. I'll have to dig a little deeper into the IGN 1 circuit, haha!
LOL, for what it's worth, no problems today... I hate intermittent crap!

How much trouble is it to take down the instrument cluster at the speedo?

This is beautiful guys I've been wanting to take my Dash down and fix a few lights within the gauges portion, and now that I seen this pictorial, i can as well as Check Into my Tach, it only works intermediate if I knock on the clear lens in the front of the Inst. cluster. Thanks, this is priceles

Try this when cluster stops working remove your radio and see if its starts working. I had issue when i put radio from 2002-2003 to my 2001 the cluster will stop working or same thing if i put 2001 radio in 2002-2003 car not sure why .. so maybe w.e its connected to maybe there is a short in the radio.

Power drain from lights + bad joint (high resistance) and it gets just below the threshold for a voltage regulator, maybe? BTW, on the bulbs, given they are soldered... I have one burnt. I guess not too bad considering how old the car is. But if I ever do this, I would want to do this once and for all. Any 12v white dimmable LED from a more recent vehicule can be used instead of grain of wheat glass bulbs? Francois

Haha, like I said, if I have to go in, I'm replacing the whole thing, lol!
New twist;
"AIR BAG PROBLEM" on the DIC just before the tach and speedo die X3 today. Threw a CKP sensor code, no SRS codes. WTH? Gremlins?

tigger,
Perhaps an intermittent connection for the IPC class 2 serial data link, but the possibility exists for an intermittent communication from some other module(s). This can be a tough one if you don't have access to a Tech2 tool. Have you scanned for DTC's?

I hate intermittent problems, they're always the worst to track down! Let's hope it's cleared up by itself.

Thanks sall, sempar. Anyone got a good price for a Tech2 clone? Haha, I can "replicate" the problem two or three times a day! Until I figure it out, Torque app for everyone in the household, lol!

Yes, I did. No difference...
Haven't had the tach/speedo issue for a few days now. Newest twist is that that the starter won't engage unless you turn the key to ON, wait for a few seconds, then START. So far that works every time, if you turn the key immediately from OFF to START, you get nothing...
Starting to think all of this is ignition switch related.

^Haha, I hope so!
More weird crap today, tach and sprrdo died, then came back! That's a first.
Later in the day, engine started then immediately died when the AC compressor kicked in, restarted and same thing. Turned of the AC, it started and ran flawlessly. Voltage drop?
My head hurts...

Just behind the alternator to just below the engine bay fuse box.
