Well guys I have fallen victim to the infamous torque converter clutch performance or stuck off code. The only code active is p0741. with in my research I have done I have concluded that it is the seals leaking allowing fluid to pass through the torque converter and too much slip to occur. Now I am a professional mechanic myself but I work on heavy equipment and do not have access to a lift in order to pull my transmission and engine out of the car to make the repair. I'll more than likely end up taking this to a transmission shop if I can find a good price. My question to you is this besides having the torque converter replaced and the solenoid in the side cover replaced what else do I need to have replaced? Are those seals part of the torque converter or are those parts All In Their Own? Any help is appreciated I love this car but this is the second time I have had this code come up in two different cars... The first one was in my 95. I would like to keep it and get it fixed this winter when I have a pretty nice bonus check come in from work but at the same time if this thing is going to continue giving me problems even after having the torque converter replaced I'm just thinking about offloading it and buying myself police car LOL thanks for your help guys

p0741 is common code in Auroras and caddies or w.e other cars have 4t8oe trans. 80% of the time you need to replace the Torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid. in my case with that code the trans needed to be rebuild.

From my understanding you need to replace the solenoid when you have the other code p18xx or something like that... With the p0741 alone it's a seal... Unless I'm misunderstood

I might also add that at around 45 mph with stay throttle I can take the brakes and the tcc will unlock

There was TSB from GM that for our cars its the solenoid only. doesn't have to have 2nd code. But it is remanded to change the converter anyway.

Oh wow really? Do you have a link to this TSB by any chance? I guess on The Cadillacs it's the TCC as well huh? If I can get away with just replacing the solenoid without having to pull this transmission out that would be awesome. I guess I learn something new everyday and with everything that I've searched on the internet everybody else within Aurora has had the transmission pulled and rebuilt when all they really needed was a $50 solenoid? I guess my day is gotten a little bit better huh

According to TSB 04-07-30-034A OCT 09 from GM it's the seals. I'm not trying to argue you have always been very helpful for me I'm just trying to narrow this down so I can get rid of this damn code

Hello i saw that TSB at the trans shop i didn't see it online. There was few people with 1g auroras who had same code and replaced the solenoid and issue was resolved. But again you might be right on the seals. But i dont think 2g has enough room to even replace the solenoid without taking the trans out i think 1g and cadi has more room then 2g.

We also have been having the PO741 on our Aurora. I purchased the TCC solenoid and my husband is going to replace it. He has looked it over and has decided that this part must be INSIDE the transmission, not on the outside as some other vehicles show. Is this correct? The transmission has to be taken apart to replace the TCC solenoid? Thank you in advance.

Thats correct Trans need to be dropped but before he will replace the part he should drop the trans pan and see if there is any metal in it. if there is means trans has bigger issues. Of cause once pan is dropped it will loose all the trans oil so would need to be refiled. The solenoid is on the side cover some people on this forum were able to drop trans so low to get to the side cover and replace the solenoid but it took them almost same time as it would be removing trans and putting it back in.

Thank you Paul, I will give my husband this information. There is indeed metal in the fluid on one of the filters he removed. He still hasn't been able to locate the TCC solenoid to replace it and wonders if it is acting up due to residue plugging it up since the vehicle has been showing this code off and on for quite some time now.
