Okay, so I'm getting ready to do the exhaust in my 4.0 and I'm looking for something very deep and throaty... I heard a few exhausts on the 4.0 that sounded really high pitched. I'm really looking for that deep Rumble that you get from the usual LT or LS engines. I didn't like the Borla for that same reason, it wasn't deep enough for my taste.
Does anyone have any ideas or even sound clip from exhausts that have been done so far? I've been all over youtube trying to find something good...

Here's my old aurora with straight pipes www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjxvZo102J4If you go the straight pipe route I'd use an electronic cutout. Otherwise I'd suggest magnaflow or flowmaster

I have corsa modified to fit the aurora. Not much modification is needed. But this in my opinion is hands down best sounding exhaust. I have corsa on my c6 corvette, my gf had corsa on her 99 seville sts and i have corsa on the aurora. Clean, throaty and sounds great. Everyone on the street asks, " hey man, what the hell you got in that thing." I got my exhaust from a scraped seville sts. I got lucky. Otherwise its about 1200 bucks. Just depends what you are willing to spend.

I only fully open it when I want to be obnoxious. Which isn't often.

The N* is one of the best sounding American V-8 motors out there. It has that low end growl, but also high end scream which sounds like you don't care much for. Corsa always has, and always will - be out of my price range. The issue with the Aurora is the single Y pipe exhaust. There's not much room for improvement (literally). If it wasn't a transverse mounted FWD engine there'd be room for longer collector tube headers. True duals would sound better, especially with an H or X pipe! As it is; mufflers vs. glass packs, or going to a larger diameter pipe (2.75" vs. oem 2.5") a cat delete, resonator delete, and different tips, is all your options. I have chosen to try and balance great sound with weight reduction. What good is an exhaust system that gains 6 hp, only to lose an equivalent 3 hp in weight? I'm sure that's exaggerated but gets my point across. Either one will show slight improvements but an H pipe will generally increase HP, while an X pipe will increase torque. On a dyno, the LS1 benefited more from an X pipe (Engine Masters on youtube). Straight pipes were 129 DB, X pipe was 128, and H pipe was 127. There was literally only 1 decibel difference between each set up, and that's with a 350 cid (bigger air pump).

Anyone know if the headers on the 4.6 are any different from the 4.0 headers and if they're interchangeable?
I was looking into borla but they don't have anything for the olds. I guess I would have to modify the STS catback. I have to look into course and see what that's running. I wonder if MagnaFlow has a catback for our cars?

I just did resonator and muffler delete. I put a thrush glasspack in the spot the resonator went and I really like it! Not raspy or high pitched. Really low tone. Kept the stock tips and it doesn’t look any different but sounds amazing! No drone at highway speeds also. 03 4.0

That doesn't sound half bad with the resonator/highflow cat and stock mufflers. I had highflow cat with resonator and no mufflers on my old Aurora. Sounded really good but unfortunately she got totaled about 2 weeks or so after I got the high flow cat so I never really got to enjoy it.

That was actually really helpful Tig. I wonder how the drone is with straights...

That was actually really helpful Tig. I wonder how the drone is with straights... It's there, it never really bothered me when I drove as I had the radio up pretty loud most of the time anyways. Best idea is as Sall did, electronic cutouts. Loud when you want it, quiet when you don't.

It sounds amazing when the valve is open, but I swear it’s gotten quieter. I’m probably going deaf though. I don’t particularly care about the high-end sound, but at low revs it sounds great. Even has a nice rumble to it on deceleration.
