OK, there's nothing wrong with my 4.0 but I'm putting away the necessary fundage to pick up a brand new crate 4.6 and I wanted to know what was the best option as far as power is concerned... Vin Y of 9... do swapping heads on either of those two make any difference? are the headers the same across both motors? anything I should know? do 4.6 headers make any difference on the 4.0 or are they the same?

Your choice. The VIN 9 has more horsepower, the VIN Y has more torque.
L37 (VIN 9) 300 hp (224 kW) @ 6000 rpm 295 lb·ft (400 N·m) @ 4400 rpm
LD8 (VIN Y) 275 hp (205 kW) @ 5600 rpm 300 lb·ft (407 N·m) @ 4000 rpm
I highly doubt the heads of either would work on the 4.0. But you could swap out the cams...
Like they say, no replacement for displacement.

5ft/lbs seems like a good compromise for 25 go lol
What about headers? Are they that much different?
I guess I'm going vin 9...

Well, it depends on when you want to make your power. The Y is a little better on the bottom end, the 9 is a little better at walking things down on the top, lol! Either one will be a nice upgrade over the 250/260 4.0.
Headers?!? Haha, you wish! But no, there's no difference at all. LD8, L37, and L47(4.0) used the same exhaust manifolds, crossover pipe, and collector from '00-'05.

Vin 9 is the way to go but the Vin 9 exhaust cams are a direct fit into the 4.0 and with a pcm tune will out perform the 4.6 assuming it isn't also pcm tuned! This according to 2009 dyno results (source: North Star Performance, Canada)

A crate motor would be very expensive no? You can get a studded rebuilt vin 9 engine from Northstar Performance way cheaper.

As soon as things get cleared up here I'll be posting all about it. In the meantime, don't consider NSP for anything! Uh-oh. Another problem with NSP? I need to hear about this...

New? I think GM still sells them...
Wouldn't you feel better about a studded reman? Or better yet, rebuilding and studding one yourself?
