If I was to guess I'd say fuel related, fuel pressure regulator maybe? Do you mean the check engine light will come on sometimes and then shut off other times, or that it is flashing? Traction control light wouldn't be related, could be a number of things. Either way I'd say get the codes read for the check engine light and go from there. Even if it's off, the codes that put it on in the first place will be stored in the computer.

^Yeah, pull the codes.
And while you have the scan tool, check the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor reading right after a cold start. If the PCM doesn't know it's cold, you won't get the cold start fuel enrichment...

I was having major cold start issues and it only gets into the 30's here in the high desert - Just went though all of this a couple weeks ago. Even had to pump the gas a couple different times to get her to start, and some starts were delayed, and/or really hard (high rev).
What resolved my problems completely: Make sure I had enough oil in the car (5w-30 for the cold starts per the owners manual), and roll the key forward and wait for the 5 dings! I now roll all car keys forward and wait to power on all electronics, which sometimes include fuel pumps.. I used a mix of 5w-30 and 10w-30 conventional and synthetic because I'm a rebel. If you haven't had your oil changed recently and you drive regularly, you probably need to add a quart. These northstars are thirsty engines that need proper protection on cold starts.
Hope this helps & saves your some $$$.

You probably are having a problem with fuel pressure, that letting the pump prime is helping out.
