Is it basically the same process to program the remote for a 2001 as it is for a gen 1?

Not at all.
Tech 2 required, or a Dorman replacement fob w/programmer.

Haha, well, look at it this way;
A trip to the dealer for programming and the Dorman replacement are gonna cost you about the same amount of cash. At least with the Dorman option, you'll have a spare fob AND a programmer, lol!
