OK my issue is getting more and more weird. In the course of troubleshooting my random door unlocking problem, If I turn on the key but don't start it, or after I turn it off and remove the key, I can hear the gauges clicking and bouncing just a hair, then after maybe 45secs later the entire dashboard will reboot, just like when you turned the key on normally (without touching the key) you will get the chime and Xmas lights. If the key is out and you will just get that kind crunching sound right before the dash lights up, but the key is out so no lights chime etc.
This issue only appears when it's warm out like 45-50 degrees and warmer. I banged on the ECU Air box under the hood wiggled the main wiring harness there banged on the fuse box under the hood no change.
That make any sense to anyone?

Haha, I think it may be possessed!
Seriously though, I had a lot of weird crap going on with my gauge cluster when my ignition switch started failing. Pegged needles, sweeping needles, dead cluster, you name it! Not saying it was exactly like your issue, but maybe worth checking out.
FWIW, does it ever stall while you're driving?

90% ignition switch or some kind of short in battery.
