So I have done a search and found all sorts of information about oil pressure but I have missed the all important question:
What is normal operating oil pressure at idle?
I just changed the sending unit today. The old one disintegrated in my hand. I couldn't believe it! I got 14 and then it fell to 11 at idle with the car having a 10 minute test drive and being on for about 20 minutes. The old unit was showing 9. So what's the normal range?

Once it fully warms up, idle should be around 6-8 psi for the v8. I think the v6 is just a nudge higher, but barely.

What is normal operating oil pressure at idle? The FSM only lists minimum acceptable values; 5 psi @not, @idle 35 psi @not, @2000rpm for the V8. 8 psi @not, @idle 29 psi @not, @2000rpm for the V6. FWIW, my '01 (4.0, 160k) idles at around 17psi...

I was getting 16psi when car warms up and i am in D on stop light for example. When the car cold it could start form like 80psi and going down

6-8 psi sounds quite low to me. I've never had either of my Auroras go below 10 at idle warmed up. I was trying to check it out Friday looked like I was around 15-17 or so at idle. For what it's worth I'd expect that different types of oil (conventional v synthetic) and viscosities would affect the readings for oil pressure.

I also felt like 5 psi is low at ile. I changed the oil and didnt find metal shavings in it so I guess the bearings arent wearing out. (I should hope not, it's only got 94k on that V8).
Considering that I went through the low oil pressure deal with my Toro and wound up eventually having to change bearings and a camshaft, I am going to put 10w30 in at my next oil change. I'd feel much better about idling around 11psi.

That's what I have always run, Mobi1-1 Synthetic 10w-30, usually high mileage. I tried 5w-30 before but I swear it increased my oil leaks, maybe it's anecdotal but I ended up putting in over 2 qts between changes with 5w compared to a quart or so with 10w.

...I am going to put 10w30 in at my next oil change. I'd feel much better about idling around 11psi. A higher "W" number only means it's more viscous when cold. If anything, you want to increase hot viscosity, so 5W40. The pressure numbers that I posted above are MINIMUM numbers, I wouldn't sweat 11 psi ...yet.

Just dont be like me and have 0 psi at idle. RIP aurora. Press F to pay respects.

I had the low oil pressure problem whenever I stopped while driving it would drop to zero. I added a bottle of Murphy's Miracle Oil and let it run in there for about 2 months. The problem went away. I have replaced the oil pressure switch with the AC Delco switch and the problem was still there after a while but has since disappeared.
