Not a bad thing, really. The car was giving me all sorts of issues. Losing coolant, the A/C compressor went out, and it was needing tires. I only gave a grand for the car about three years ago. Mechanically it was great, the interior was nearly perfect, but it spent its life under southern oak trees and the paint was pretty much useless. Anyway, I've enjoyed it for three years with minimal issues, but this summer both the coolant thing and the A/C thing happened, then one front tire started showing steel.
It took several big hits during the hurricane from wind-borne debris. nothing fell on it, I lost no glass, but I have 6 or 7 really big dents along the right side. Progressive gave me 3200 bucks for it, so even with what I've had to do to it, it turns out to be a free car for the time I've had it! I could have kept it for 500 bucks less, and I thought about it, to part out the interior. The seats are perfect tan leather, the memory module works, and the carpet is perfect. Chrome wheels, too, ought to be a little value in those. But where would I put it while tearing it down, and how do I get rid of it after? So off it goes.
My other car, also totaled, is a '99 Miata. It took some minor body damage, a lot of scuffs and a couple of small dents, when the ceiling of the garage fell in, and the garage door came down, allowing wind to blow stuff around the garage. The top didn't get pierced, amazingly enough, but on of the ribs got slightly bent. The top still folds and is still weatherproof, but the expense of a new frame put it over the top (so to speak) for a total loss. Without that bent rib, I was getting a couple of new panels and a full paint job! They wouldn't take the top off the claim, I guess claims aren't a la carte... Anyway, I kept that car, and still got more than I paid for it. between it and the 'Rora, I've got just under 8 grand to go big-car shopping. Probably not another Aurora, though. That motor just scares me too much!
