01 3.5 has a rough idle when engine is cold. Depending on temp outside it lasts a few seconds when its warm out up to a minute when its cold out. Anyone have this issue before? Any possible causes? The car does have a bad crank position sensor i need to replace, im hoping it didnt cause timing to jump. Thanks

That bad crankshaft position sensor might be the cause of that. And have it scanned to make sure.

I talked to my brother who is a mechanic he said it could be spark plugs since i havent changed them for probably 50k miles now. However, I did scan it and it had a few codes pop up. (Ive been neglecting it due to being short on cash lately) IIRC it had 2 codes for crank position sensor. Also some other codes one i believe to be bad o2 sensor and a couple to do with vaccum leaks. Im not by any means a mechanic so i dont know the technicalities of the codes. Also yesterday after giving it a bath and full detail i took it for a spin and from first to second gear it acts up. Sometimes taking forever to shift and when it shifts, it shifts hard. Not sure if trans is going or i just need a trans cooler since its getting warmer out. On top of all that i have probably a million other little headaches with this car but it is almost 20 years old and my first car so im gonna keep it as long as possible.

I would deff start with crank position sensor. Spark plugs last up to 100k miles.

Yeah, sounds like changing the CKPS and fixing those vac leaks would solve your engine issues...
When was the trans last serviced? Hard or delayed shifts could just be caused by worn out old fluid.

Spark plugs changed around 70k miles ago (correction from last post saying 50k miles) when i replaced engine. I dont remember but i may have changed transmission fluid while installing the “new” engine. The trans didnt start acting up until i plugged a scanner in and cleared the codes. Drove it for a few days now it shifts smoothly again. Probably going to change the crank sensor by next weekend if i have time hopefully thatll work a few bugs out. Not sure how to fix a vacuum leak, i know a smoke machine helps but i dont have one. I noticed a small plastic hose (vacuum line?) running across the top of the intake manifold is broken completely in half. I assume that could be the cause of the leak. Thanks for all your responses and being patient with me. I am by no means mechanically inclined but i do try to learn and fix things by myself.

Yeah, a smoke machine is a great tool to help find leaks, but you very rarely need one. More often than not, you can spray carb cleaner around the intake and throttle body area with the engine idling and when you get to the leak, the engine idle will drop (almost choke). This only tells you the general location of the leak, but it's a good indicator... (DO NOT SPRAY AROUND EXHAUST MANIFOLDS!!!) And definitely fix that line! I think it's probably for the secondary air injection, but fix it anyway, haha! GL, and let us know!

Thanks Trigger. Today's the day I start repairing the olds since I have time for it. I'm not sure how to post pictures but my parking brake is unhooked from the rear driver side wheel due to changing the caliper and not knowing how to put it back on, any tips on how to compress the spring? Also will give updates after I finish the ckps and do an oil change.

Will have to check that out Paul. Got the ckps changed, starts right up every time. Also got my horn replaced today, one of them wasnt working so it sounded terrible. I appreciate all the help. Now on to the next few issues to work out.
