I have to replace the subframe and when I FINALLY can work on the car I will be doing that. What other goodies are convenient or easier when its out? I will be doing ac compressor(not good) for sure.

Yeah definitely coolant crossover. Heater hoses. Valve covers and oil pan and I'd say half case gasket. Maybe transmission side cover filter. Check the condition of your power steering rack and lines. Motor/trans mounts.

Valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, cross over seals... Valve cover? Is that in anyway easier with the subframe out? Oil pan gasket.. that requires disassemby of exhaust, correct? The crossover.. Ive heard off it... could I see what it is? Ive never dealt with it before.

Check the condition of your power steering rack and lines. Motor/trans mounts. Hoses. Good thinking. There is a filter on the SIDE of the trans? Are all motor mounts available for 99? Including the one in the front that is only on a 99? Half case gasket?

Thanks you two for ideas, info on them would be much appreciated. I havent gotten anywhere at all deep into a northstar engine before. The most i did was oil change. and that 7.5 quart nightmare wasnt too bad. But all experience i have is with the shortstar, LX5, the v6. Not sure how applicable any knowledge is.

I think Rob and I both assumed you'd be dropping the entire drivetrain out the bottom to swap out the sub-frame. All of the suggestion are just things you should do if you have to remove the engine/trans...

Oh, no, unless I need to or it becomes way more of a plus than a minus, I just planned to replace the subframe because its rotted on one back side. No metal left on 1 mount spot(mount is still good, bolt comes out) but the subframe is gone around it. Not the one next to it, tho. odly. So I found a replacement and im going to put it in.

You'll have to support the engine/trans while you unbolt the sub-frame and drop it. Now what? You can't get the old frame out or the new one in because of the support, haha!
I don't see any way around dropping the whole drivetrain...
Unless you have a hoist, maybe.

Yeah I figured you'd have to take the whole drivetrain out. I think all the mounts but the torque axis mount on top should be available. But I don't have a '99 so I'm not sure on the additional '99 only mount. I never did the mounts on my old '99. There's a thread in the stickies with the part numbers for the mounts and inserts. (Called trans mounts technically).
The half case is the engine block. It is split in two pieces and bolted together. They tend to leak from that joint more so than the oil pan itself. The coolant crossover is the piece where the water pump mounts, it's where the coolant transfers from one bank of the engine to the other. It has a bunch of smaller seals that almost always are bad.
I've never done it, but there is supposed to be a filter in the 4T80e within the side cover.

Wait, why cant the subframe come out without dropping the drivetrain? And is there a tutortial? I mean, if it HAS to come out I guess Im gonna do some freaking work haha because I stg If I had to do it again anytime soon, Id be mad. But if its not necessary to remove. Im just confused why the engine cant be held in with engine hoist and the subframe unbolted from rack, swaybar, control arms(since that would connect strut to body, tie rod, etc), motor mounts, and of course body why it wouldnt just come out.

Unless you have a hoist, maybe. Ah, I was sitting here thinking like a chain hoist for lifting.. yeah I was overcomplicating the word hoist haha

I just started removal of my subframe on my 03 Olds Aurora, and I've ran into a problem. I removed the 6 frame bolts, also removed front motor mount bolt and the 2 rear motor mount hex bolts and anything that I thought would snag while dropping the frame, however when I go to drop the frame something is still holding it up! What else could be stopping it from dropping any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
