My ‘01 4.0 with 251K starts quickly at initial firing but once I put in Drive or reverse it dies. I also get the message Check Gas Cap. This occurs when engine is cold although the message appears each time the engine is running. Where should I look to resolve this problem?

I see crank sensors a lot for issues like this. I'd also check for a vacuum leak.

I'd give the MAF, throttle body and IACV a good cleaning for the stall...
For the gas cap message, check the filler neck for any rust and the underside of the cap to make sure the rubber seal isn't damaged.

for me was bad Idle control solenoid. Car was running if i keep my foot on the gas. Otherwise it would die i read the codes and it came up for that solenoid. I would check the codes.

Check the codes and see what your diagnosis options are
