Does it work from the inside? You may have a broken door handle if so.

Both the inside and outside levers move but nothing happens. Inside lever seems to actuate something inside the door, the outside feels disconnected.

I got a stuck front door open once by attacking the latch attached to the car with a sawzall. Ebay ones were $30 so when I went to the boneyard to get one I got a bunch and sold them for cost plus shipping almost out of spite.
Hopefully you don't need to do that.
Edit: I am not sure of clearances on the back door btw.

Both the inside and outside levers move but nothing happens. Inside lever seems to actuate something inside the door, the outside feels disconnected. my 99 park avenue has a similar latch system i think and the rear passenger door Has a similar issue. the handle DOES feel "detached" but IT IS attached in actuality. The interior IS for sure attached and feels like it. But door wont budge. The child lock slider is not engaged. But, the linkages, if you play with the door lock knob and work it around aggressively and quickly while trying the handle, I CAN get it to catch and open. its like the lock knob doesnt fully unlock usually and the arms are binding or something is gummed up somewhere. my 2001 aurora had a similar but not as hard to get issue on it when i had it. i havent opened the door up and fixed it yet, but i think its the lock mechanism or the linkages and something is bent or binding up somewhere. My 2 centavos

Thanks for the detailed reply. I will try your cure once the outside temps go down.

Try that method first. Hopefully you aren't just unlucky and have a broken exterior handle with the child safety lock engaged.

I actually thought I had that till one day my dad just casually opened the door to put christmas presents in for the trip to gmas and I just about threw everything on the ground and yelled at him to keep the door open so i could investigate his witchcraft. after figuring i did NOT have child lock enabled i shut it and couldnt get it. month later i figeted with it and discovered what i said, i could get it to catch periodically but not reliably or any specific motion.
