I have a rather annoying noise coming from the engine compartment in my son's 2003 Aurora. My mechanic said it's the A/C compressor and should probably be replaced. I see RockAuto has replacement compressors for $160-$200, but they also have replacement bearings for those compressors. Has anyone ever replaced just the bearing with good results? Am I crazy for even considering this alternative? On 2nd thought, don't answer that!!!

Get a new compressor. That way, you'll have either a brand new or reman unit. Other parts in the old compressor could be on the verge of going bad.

To All, OK, I did have the A/C compressor replaced. My desired auto shop says these A/C compressors are getting rather hard to find. Many places didn't carry it or couldn't get it. They found 1 for I think around $700. They allowed me to buy one from Rockauto and they installed it. Now my real reason for this update is Rockauto didn't charge me a core charge and when I told them I'd like to send the core back anyways, they said to throw it away. I then called Four Season A/C Compressor who suppplied the rebuilt compressor and they said they couldn't take it unless Rockauto or someone else took it back. I don't want any money for it. I just don't want to throw it away as some of these parts are getting harder to find for our cars. Am I an idiot for wanting to send a perfectly good rebuildable core to some rebuilder? ? Thoughts or suggestions please!

I thought I might receive a reply to this. It seems crazy to me to throw this away, but I guess I'll just toss it.

That is a little strange, especially coming from a place that rebuilds them. For what it is worth, I think the bearing is replaceable but it would have to be taken off of the car to do it and as long as you are going that far it almost becomes worth it to replace the compressor all as a unit, which I see you did. What kind of noise was our compressor making? I've had mine go out on both Aurora's I owned and they made the same noise but now I'm getting a different whirring kind of noise. I have recently replaced the Power steering pump, and both idler and tensioner so it leaves either the compressor again, the alternator again, or timing chain tensioners haha.

The compressor just seemed to have a louder noise coming from it like maybe the bearing was going bad. Hard to explain the noise. I did have it replaced and noise is gone. I too, can't belive a rebuilder wouldn't want a good core back. Not like the good ole' days.
