So from what I’ve seen the 4.0 has overheating issues in general has anyone figured a way around this I haven’t seen much on it but will keep looking Head gaskets will eventually rot out. I bought my 97 in 2011 with 48,000km. Paid more than the book value because it was in great condition. In 2012 I changed the coolant from the original Dex-cool to a generic long life coolant. And then my kids drove the wheels off of it until last year for jobs and recreation (now has over 150,000km). The temperature remained fine and the coolant looked fine until the head gaskets rotted/corroded. We did not test the cylinder deactivation feature by running it without coolant and stopped driving it immediately rather than risk permanent damage. Jake Wiebe did his Northstar head stud kit and better gaskets for me, but I was lucky since he no longer does the wrenching himself. Finding a shop that will work on Northstars is almost impossible in my neck of the woods here in southwestern Ontario. The gasket and stud job can't be done with the engine in the car, so most shops drop the engine/transaxle out the bottom. That's a good time to check over everything else while the engine is out. Mine had no discernable wear on the cam lobes which was good and no amount of stretch on the timing chains, although Jake changed one tensioner. So, find a competent shop willing to do the work before proceeding. If you have a hoist and lots of time, you can do the job yourself. I lack both. Fred

Fred Thanks for the info I will have to see what mechanics are willing to do the job luckily I’ve been seeing quite a few 1st gens around so somebody’s gotta be working on them here in ND

So far on mine which has a 127000 miles on it after I have Remove the engine and transmission resealed the bottom case half and the oil Pan to the engine and then rebuilt the transmission mine runs a steady 200 to 203 lowest i have seen going down the highway is like 198 I have noticed that the tempgage scaling is a little off because just above 200 is really only like 203 And it about the 220 mark you're only at about 216
