Anyone have experience with their Aurora where when shut down the engine you can hear a "gurgling" like the antifreeze is boiling? My temp gage indicates normal temp, I can't see any leaks BUT it seems like I did lose some fluid as witnessed from the overflow tank. Does anyone know where the thermostat is and how easy / difficult it is to change out. I thought maybe it was sticking closed. In this car you can't see the radiator. Is there a coolant drain plug somewhere???

the coolant drain plug in under the car on the passenger's side. right under the radiator......... ;D but, of course, I don't work on my car so maybe someone more knowledgable can help you out. Jim, Howard, Anyone? ??

If its gurgling then that would simply mean there is air in the system. I dont believe DexCool can't get hot enough to physically boil. It may boil on the exhaust manifolds, but those are so hot that it burns on contact releasing a sweet smelling burnt plastic smell.
Might be helpful to check the the cap on the coolant reservior and open it....it should be pressurized and a hissing sound should be heard. Give that a shot. If there is no hiss then that would indicate a leak in the system

JimW..........I did check the cap and it was pressurized. I slowwly opened it and fluid rose and overflowed a little. As far as air, how would I all of a sudden get air in the system? When coolant is changed, is all the coolant added through the oveflow? I can't see the radiator and was wondering if it has the "Normal" fill cap. How would one purge the system of air then if the fluid is only added to the overflow?

I had a problem like that in my *shudders* 900s (that was horrifying vehicle I had it equipped with optional paper bags for people to put over their heads in embarrassment of being seen in the car.) Anyway, it ended up developing into a water pump issue, I never fixed it and by the time the car met it’s fate – ok, ok it wasn’t that dramatic it just stopped running one day… in the middle of an intersection… (bad crank censor) I had to carry 7 (I’m not kidding!) gallons of water with me anywhere I went to fill up the car so it wouldn’t over heat and make sure where ever my destination was I could fill up those bottles to get back home with out over heating… So I am nervous wreck when it comes to do with anything about the water pump area and while this story had barely any relevance to your question and did not answer anything either. – I’m sure it provided for a little humor. LoL

.......I did check the cap and it was pressurized. I slowwly opened it and fluid rose and overflowed a little. You should check the level when it's cold, it should be up to the seam in the tank, or just a little more - if there's too much in there it will overflow when it's hot and the bubbling noise could be the fluid running back into the rad through the overflow pipe. It sounds as if you don't have much of a problem as long as the temp gauge says you're ok (assuming it's working properly) Howard

dred98.....Thanks for the reply...I'm tempted to think that it may be air but unsure how to purge the system. When the radiator is filled, is the filling through the Overflow Container or through the radiator cap which I cannot find? I mean, if I were going to flush the system, where do I add the coolant??

On my 98 any coolant should be added to the surge tank - the coolant recovery tank - this is where the pressure cap is, and there wouldn't be air in the system as this surge tank is the highest point and any air would work its way out into the tank, as long as the level is OK. The gurgling may just be the transfer between the surge tank and the rad itself. I don't think you have any reason to worry - just keep an eye on the temp gauge to see that everything is OK. Howard

Thanks Howard....I did notice the factory pressure cap was a little cracked. I went to Olds and they showed a replacement of 18 psi instead of the 15 psi that I had installed. I bought it, installed it and the car ran 25 deg hotter! I went to Discount Auto and bought a Stant brand replacement at the 15 psi rating. Temp now back to normal. The gurgling is on and off. It may be just like you said though. I just get concerned because when I open the hood I can faintly smell anti-freeze but none to be seen...Might this be normal if the tank is venting?
