alright another problem. the security is always locking it up when i go to start it and it says "clean key-wait 3 min." so i wait for the light to go off then start it. ive cleaned the key so many times and its both sets.. sometimes it will come on when im driving and stay on for a while then jus turn itself off. the car is about to be history...

This problem has happened to a few people. Search the threads, but if I remember correctly, it's not that big of a deal to fix. Keep your chin up, grasshopper!

I'm no expert but it sounds like either the security system 'brain' might be going bad, or your ignition switch is. My car would never turn off while driving, but it would only start with the key about 20% of the time. I ended up just splicing into the Vehicle Anti Theft System (VATS) wires and wiring in ar esister to match the chip in my key. Thaht solved my problem. this was on a 1997 Riviera. Just be fully warned if that's the problem you must dissassemble a large amount of your dash. Pictures from the install on my Riviera: (1997) amount of dash I had to dissassemble minimum to get to the VATS wires: The tiny hair-like wires that go into the ignition switch and then to two metal tabs that touch the pellet in the ignition key: My resistor soldered into place: If you dont' feel comfortable doing this, I would have to recommend a dealer. The job wasn't really hard, it was just time consuming for me. If you want more info on how to do this just let me know.

Lots of GM cars had this problem. We had Caddys do this, especially when the car battery was going bad on them. May be worth a check.

;D I fought this for 2 years. The problem is that the contacts in the switch that make contact with the resistor on your key get dirtier than on the key!! Get some Contact or Tunner cleaner spray at Radio Shack and squret it in the key hole and keep it in the car. ha ha
The real sultion which I finally did was to go to any GM dealer and ask them what the restance of your key is. Or better yet go to Radio Shack and ask them to measure the key and then get a resistor of the same value +/- 20% and put it in place of the contacts like the pictures show from your other replay, That way you know its going to start. I have smoked a lot of cigs waiting for that 3 min to set. haha
