I've noticed that when i start my aurora, the sepentine belt squeaks. If i spray a little wd40 on the belt, the squeak stops immediately but starts again shortly. It squeaks a little louder when accelerating but stops when i let off the gas. After its warming up, the squeak goes away. I actually found a shop today that says they like working on auroras and they arent too bad, except the belt. He said you basically need to remove the quarter panel and use a torch cutter to take it off. JOKE JOKE. So anyone know what causes the squeak and is there a quick fix to this problem? Im thinking idler pulley/tensioner pulley maybe.

I'm not trying to depress you or anything, but I took my 98 into the dealer who diagnosed a squeaky tensioner wheel, and they ended up replacing the alternator. If I'd known it was the alternator I would have left it - they can make a noise for a long time before they die. (That's one of several reasons I go to a different dealer now.)

If it is the alternator, at least you have time to look online for cheaper ones.
Dont rush to the dealer for OE parts if you dont have too

Seriously tho, I found MANY OE parts thru other sources for 1/2 price.

yeah, i actually remember that my dodge caravan i own for my company delivery van had an alternator that did that. Its amazing what i forget. Thanks Dred for reminding me. I will go get it checked out. I never go to the dealer for anything but i do have to wait to order parts all the time for this car.

If the alternator is making funny noises, would there be a drop in voltage on the DIC?

if it helps to say this. My DIC battery voltage readout is at a constant 15.0 volts when running and driving. DOn't know if this helps, just thought i'd pass it along.

im leaning towards the idler pulley or tensior pulley. it seems to do it more until you drive it for a few minutes. Thanks for your DIC readout.

If its a squeak, its the belt itself. If it sounds more like a grind or rattle its a bearing either tensioner or alternator or ac or steering pump.
I'll put money on the belt itself, why because it goes away with the wd immediately.
Had the same prob. Replaced the belt. Problem solved.

I agree with the belt - I had a squeak like that in my '86 Buick - thought about everything (tensioner, alternator, etc), but when I changed the belt, it went away! Then, I got rear-ended and the car was totaled...

Change the belts first before getting into tensioners or alternators - belts are cheap and need eventual replacement. Alternators on the other hand, are not so cheap.

Can you get at the front of the alternator and spray the WD 40 only in the alternator w/o getting it on the belt? Also, there is belt dressing available at local parts stores that can cure a squeaky belt if that is truly the problem. The difficulty in determining the exact cause is that once anything is put on the belt, it gets spread onto all of the pulleys and such as it is running…
The squeaky alternator should still put out the same. It's really a bearing that is making the noise.

For some reason spraying WD40 into an alternator sounds like a bad idea to me.
