I get in the car to drive home tonight and I notice my security light is still on a minute into the trip. About 15 minutes later, the security light goes off. What gives? Have the cops been alerted to my occasional runs on the freeways? Are there gremlins in my car's computer? I don't think it was a full moon tonight, so everything should be fine! I hope?

It is possible that your car key is getting dirty. Wipe off with some rubbing alcohol and give it another try.

The security light coming on isn't related to the VATS system. Any problem with the key itself will result in a DIC message. If the idiot light comes on it means that a component of the theft deterrent system is testing inoperable. My security idiot light will occasionally come on, but there is no underlying problem that I can detect. The system tests fine even when the light indicates a malfunction. Must just be one of those things...
