I called my what used to be Olds dealer and asked him how much would he charge me for plugs and wires. The 97 has 81000 on it and I figure time to change them. He quotes me (drum roll please)......$484.00 without tax!
Plugs-A/C Delco Platinum---45.00 Wires--------------------------159.00 Labor--------------------------280.00
Would I be taking it up the a** at this price? I knew they were expensive, but christ. Any input?

You would be taking it up the *** at that price. If you can't do it yourself, shop around. I have found that the dealers always charge the highest prices. _________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

yeah tell them F'ers off. Thats pathetic. My mechanic i go to that my mom has known for 20 years only charged me 100 for the labor since it only took a little more than a hour. Also the plugs i think were 100 for all. 3 of my wires were freyed though, thats why it was stalling out on me. i almost got nailed once when the thing died as i was flooring it to make it out.

I thought so; how hard is it to get to the back four? I know the coil packs come off, but then what? Does the engine need to be tilted or can they be accessed with just the coils packs off? I can't believe they figure four hours labor for this job. The front four can only take what, ten minutes??

The engine doesn't have to be tilted to get to the rear plugs. You just have to reach further back into the engine compartment to get to the rear plugs. _________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

for me the fron took about 10 minutes, the back took about 45, 3 took me 15 minutes, but one gave me a heck of a time and took me probably the other half hour.
oh, yes you do have to take the coil pack module off (4 bolts)

My dad and I did my plugs and wires on New Years Eve. Took us less than an hour to do, Start to Finish. Total cost for me was $110. AC Delco Platinums were $6 ea. or $48 and the plug wires were $62. My new wires are Red and they really look sharp (The little bit you can see). You do need smaller hands to get to the back side of that coil pack, but the plugs were fairly simple once the pack was out of the way.

I'll chime in here once again. Best wires around are Magnecor and they cost no more ($107.00) than OEM and will last a lot longer (yours are broke, right?). They are available at many speed shops. I like the cheapest 7mm ones, but you can buy the fancier 8mm wires that have a little better insulation. I got mine from UltraRev.com and was well pleased with price and delivery. You can also get your plugs there. They carry AC Delco, the safe recommendation. Or you can try the NKG's. Only get the most expensive platinums, not the cheaper Iridium.
PS, Magnecor also make some 8.5mm and 10mm race wires that won't fit in the Aurora wire guides, don't spend the extra, there's no need unless your running a NASCAR Aurora (wonder what that would look like?)
