The 2001 shop manual recommends using flushing equipment for backflushing. This item is obviously too expensive for home use. Would a garden hose be sufficient for a cooling system flush? ________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Prestone sells a cheap aftermarket kit for "backflushing" cooling systems, using a garden hose. I bought and installed it on my '69 Executive, and it seemed to work well enough. The kit did require cutting into one of the top rear coolant hoses, to install an inlet that the hose screws onto directly... when not in use, the inlet is capped. I have never had any problems with the added part leaking any coolant... but I don't know how it would work on a newer car.

Aurora40....I looked at the 2001 shop manual and was surprised to see that on page 6-971 the use of 3 of the sealant pellets, P/N 3634621, is mentioned as being mandatory. I also thought it was only for the 1995/99. I'll have to use them. ____________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

The use of cooling system seal tabs, or similar compounds, may restrict coolant flow through the passages of the cooling system or the engine components. Restricted coolant flow may cause engine overheating and/or damage to the cooling system or the engine components/assembly.[/quote] You might check to see if there are any TSB's that modify the shop manual's procedure. I can't imagine there are any significant differences in our engines or cooling systems.

Aurora40....That warning that you quoted from the 2002 shop manual is also in the 2001 manual on page 6-969. This page, however, covers the cooling system service for the 3.5. I think that the seal tabs have to be used in the 4.0 and not in the 3.5 in the 2001s. ________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Weird, I only have one cooling section. There are engine specific instructions for repair stuff, though. But it's not two sections like the rest. My coolant change instructions are for both engines. The tabs shouldn't hurt anything anyway, though.
