Ok, when I first filled up my gas tank the DIC said my fuel range was 540 miles.. Now I'm on 1/4 of a tank and it says the fuel range is 180 miles. I'm not complaining but these numbers seem a little bit off. I'm currently getting 25.4 MPG and the gas tank is 18.5 gallons. So that means I should be able to go 469.9 miles on this tank. I have gone 350 miles right now and I'm on 1/4 of a tank which seems about right. I just don't know how the DIC is getting I should be able to go 180 miles more. Maybe the gas gauge isn't totally linear and that's why my numbers are messed up. Just seems kind of... odd.

Maybe the gas gauge isn't totally linear and that's why my numbers are messed up. I came to the same conclusion. I could run the guage all the way down to "E" and not be able to fill up with more than 15gallons at the gas station. Could be a sort of saftety built in so idiots don't run out of gas

Yep...sounds like a safeguard to me (like my stupid sunroof that wont deploy is its to cold or slightly wet : . My DIC acts up as well, glitches here and there..esp in the cold. I doubt you have much to worry about there Custom

I doubt you have much to worry about there Custom one other thing I noticed is the DIC will never display 24.3 MPG. it will either go to 24.2 or straight to 24.4. This is with a compiled average over the last 300 miles too so it's not like it changes all the time. It'll change maybe once a day up or down depending on where I'm driving, etc. It's really not an issue to me, I just noticed it and though it was just a little odd quirk.

Maybe 23.3 is bad luck? Like how some buildings don't have a 13th floor button in the elevator, they go straight from 12 to 14...

Just a few comments, the fuel range is computed based on a short-term average mileage, not your average mileage for the whole tank. Gun it for a bit and you'll see the fuel range plummet, coast a bit and it'll rise. Also, the guage does seem to have a fair bit of safety. But I've found the fuel used display to be pretty good if you reset it at each fillup. On a semi-related aside, any idea why the 4.0 has a 17.5 gallon tank and the 3.5 an 18.5 gallon one? My guess is either it's smaller to shave weight, or that it is the same size, but has a larger fuel pump, so they make "empty" higher up to provide adequate cooling for the higher-capacity pump.

I read somewhere that it's smaller to save weight on the 4.0. Also the same reason why the 4.0 has the aluminum trunk lid.

As for going empty, I've gone pretty darn low. I once filled up 19.5 gallons and it had not run out...
I hate these tricks - I can run the car 2-3 gallons after the gas gauge has gone below all three red ticks, though I've never tried to go further, I just wish they'd tell the truth as to how much gas I have left.
