I have a 2002 Aurora 3.5 with 28,000 miles , am second owner - recently - I have noticed when I cold start the car- more than six hours - there is a loud whirring sound , like a turbine when I start it , and it lasts for about 20 seconds --does this sound unusual ?

Is it just the engine running at a higher rpm? It will idle high for about 20-30 seconds and then drop. This is an emissions feature, I believe to warm the cats up quickly.

Where is the sound coming from? Under the hood? If so, start the car with the hood open, and see if you can determine exactly what part is making the noise. If it seems to be from the rear of the vehicle, it could be the rear auto-leveling air shocks (ELC) adjusting. Mine do that every time I start the car... I'm assuming the 2nd-gen has that feature also.

could it be the air injection pump maybe flaking out? I've never had this issue. The 3.5 is kind of whiny by nature though... Scotty, ELC was standard on all Auroras. Actually, it shouldn't turn on everytime you start the car either though if everything is in good shape. I think mine only turns on maybe 2-3 times per week.

I'm assuming the 2nd-gen has that feature also. I'm 80% sure it's the rear air suspension. Our 2001 4.0 makes the noise every time you start the car. It's the same I've heard in Classics, so it's normal.

I took it to the dealer and they had to keep it 2 days before it made the noise , but it turned out to be the air injector pump failing - $150/parts , $90 labour Can. Hope the little devil will behave for a while now - as I said only 28,000 miles , Cheers .

My secondary air injection pump made this sound as well. This sound seemed indicative of normal operation, not failure. Perhaps yours was louder.

I'm getting this same noise and I also have a code for the secondary air injection...maybe that's the cause. Thanks for the info!

Does the noise sound like a deep whistle sound? almost like blowing in a empty bottle or something?
