Last night, while coming home from a friends house; I raced a 1st gen. I bet the guy didn't even have a clue that I was driving the same car he was. But anyways, I was actually shocked at how slow the 1st gen went. I gave it a half car head start and then reeled it back in and past it!! I had to back off the accelerator at 60 at which point he passed me but if I hadn't, nothing would've changed. I tell you, I was really, really, shocked in the engine performance of the 1st gen.

Yea, you probably got a slow one, like mine . You could've have gotten one like aurorabrains or some of the others that are nipping at 14's. Would have been a different story.

Though w/o track numbers, its useless to compare, considering we only have one 2nd Gen that's actually made a pass

It's no fun to blow by a car that you know you could smoke, unless it was a ricer. And it's no fun to even try and race the upper end cars. But I tell you, I've upset many a Mustangs and Eclipses at me school. Hehe!

Stop by the Edmunds Acceleration to read some of my stories (they start about page 17'ish). I think it's kinda fun to race up against the higher-end cars. I mean you suppose to lose, so it doesn't matter too much if you do. But when you do, its fantasitc (225hp Audi TT, Jag XJ8, numerous 3-series). Plus there's a lot of people in decent cars here. I doubt I could found a race against a Grand Am, but give me 15 mins and I could run several G35s or big european 4-doors.

One of the guys at that link you gave me talked about turning traction control off and shifting into 2nd gear at the light. What's the point in this?

ok other than the weight isue, what makes the 2nd gens faster than the first gens??? same 4.0 engine, right??? and, does having the Autobahn package make a difference??? i have "raced " alot of cars like Acuras, BMW 3 series, Nissan maximas, etc, and have always been able to give them a run for their money, alot of times i have beaten them ( i think theyre scared to race) so how come a 1st gen Aurora would not beat a second gen if both drivers were really trying???

Its not exactly the same engine. The injectors are better. The intake is larger. The 2nd gen 4.0s all are 3.71 gear ratio. The engine electronics and throttle design is better. I got my car to run 15.15 in the quarter by using 2nd gen parts on my engine.

Well, I've read several places that the acceleration time had been improved. I dunno how, but that's what they say.

In my expierence from going to drag strips all the time i've found that no matter how fast your car can be, the driver matters the most. Especially with manual trans cars.

I still don't understand the point of putting the car in second gear to race someone from a light. Can anyone shed some light there?

I dont know the science behind it...however, we all know the tranny gears are taller in lower gears allowing you to accelerate faster, the tranny also shifts a bit harder as you're leaning on the acclerator. The 4T80E will hold 2nd gear (when the car is in 2nd) until its internal protection measures kick in and force a shift into 3rd.
I guess a race from a dig with one Aurora in 2nd and another Aurora in OD will determine.
Perhaps its all in our heads?

Howdy all.
The German terrorist killer is back behind the wheel of an Aurora, and I felt like this was the most appropriate thread to share the news.
Hard to believe it has been 10 years since I was last on here and during that time I primarily drove a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The last 3 years I have been driving a 1990 Toyota Camry, which just started dying yesterday. Thankfully, my gramps is letting me use his 96 Aurora until I can get it fixed.
I love this car but don't get me wrong: I do not miss the upkeep and maintenance. These things are nightmares at times.

So, has ten years time made you a little softer on the Classic? I'd still buy a 2G though if I found the right one, but love my classic(s). Passed up one black on black a year or so go with 60k miles. Regretted ever since.
