I think that it's there for intake noise reduction. ________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

I suppose its a common misconception that the cover holds in or releases heat whether its on or off.

I keep mine on. It's attractive, weighs like 3 lbs, and provides intake noise muffling. I have taken it off, and you do hear more intake sound. I like to hear the sound out the back, not out the front. Though, the whine of a turbo might be a little different.

I'll sacrifice the 3lbs for a beautiful engine when I impress people with what's under the hood.

If you really want to impress people, why not do this:
1. Remove cover 2. Wipe down with De-natured alcohol 3. Paint same color as your Aurora 4. Choose a color of paint pen such as silver or gold, to outline the lettering.
believe it or not it gives it a custom look. Did this on my 1990 Olds Toronado. My Toro is garnet red metallic and i painted the shroud the same color, and outlined the letters in silver. looks awesome!

You don't have to sand or prime the cover before painting? I'd think with how hot it gets you'd get some peeling rather quickly.

I assume he is talking about doing something to the composite (plastic ) upper intake manifold? Am I right?

When he said to outline the lettering with a paint marker, I assumed it was the engine cover.

Don't take this a stupid question but how do you take the engine cover off, and would i need heat resistant paint for the emgi e cover?

The plastic engine cover is held down by four nuts, plainly visible on top. Heat resistant paint wouldn't hurt but probably isn't as necessary as it would be to paint something on the engine itself. Personally, I leave my cover in place and wouldn't bother painting it.

OK I was wanting to know if the four bolts held anything else in place or not.

OK I was wanting to know if the four bolts held anything else in place or not. The nuts on top only hold the engine cover on, however...the studs those nuts thread on to are used to bolt on the intake. Removing those would cause an intake leak at a minimum. So be sure when taking the 4 nuts off of the top cover that you're not turning the stud too (I've had this happen to me at a salvage yard before) As far as heating/cooling/noise reduction with it on or off..I haven't noticed any difference and I've run it for long periods of time both ways. I have it on now because I painted mine (I did use an engine enamel), but I'd normally run with it off because it makes it easier to work on the engine haha.

The only caveat I can give about running the engine cover is if the plug wires are routed improperly it has a tendency to pinch/smash them. As for cooling it does not do a thing when removed.

Even if the engine compartment is highly detailed, I can't see how running with the cover off is an improvement in looks. But to each his own tastes. Clean up yours or an extra from the boneyard and paint it with a good automotive metallic silver, which is an improvement on stock. Or paint to match your body color if thats your thing.

Only thing I did to mine is add a nameplate ... (Does anyone know why I call it Bob? I sure as hell can't remember) <G>

I do. You kept referencing the Aurora 4.0L as a shortstar(that's the LX5) which I pointed out. So you decided to call it Bob for whatever reason. Maybe Bob is short for Bobbi. I have never called any vehicles by a mans name haha.

Give the man a ceegar!
Never been good with names. I call everyone Bob, as it's easy to remember. Starts with a B, Bob, ends with a B, Bob. Spelled the same backwards even, and it's the most common name used. Pretty funny sometimes, like yelling "Hi, Bob!" at the cute lil blonde at the hardware store, and having her smile and wave ...
Remind me again, next week, ok? <G>
