just joined the club today. relatively easy and flawless job done. i had to weasel my hand in there to push the clips from underneath, thus not damaging anything one bit. spliced 'power' mode wires, replaced glovebox lamp, vacuum - ahhhh better too =)) guys can you tell me best substance/method to affix that leather stick cover cowl thing to the shifter plastic plate ?

I need to do this. Another problem I have is my console light, sometimes it works, but usually it doesnt. Bad switch perhaps? I usually need to bump it a little to get it to work, temporarily, then the next time I open my console, it doesnt.

get it diy'ed.. it's easy enough - just 8 screws; but the pleasure you'll have when you fixed it, vacuumed there etc is enormous

OK I'm right in the middle of this, started when I got off work this morning. The console courtesy lamp is a #161, and I believe the PRND321 bulb is a #74, but its hard to tell. Mine was so burnt out I couldn't make out the number. But the #74 is the closest resemblance I could find at AutoZone. Unfortunately, their computers were down and they couldn't verify it. There was a mechanic there buying parts and he said he thought it was a #74, so I bought it. If I'm wrong, I won't change it 'till it burns out again, this has been rather a pain today. Maybe it's the 85 degree weather and muggy conditions. If anyone has any different info, please chime in........more to come later.

Finally done now, . The wires to the PRND321 bulb had been spliced before already, I guess Mom and Dad had it done when they owned it. I spliced the "power" mode wires, replaced both bulbs. I know the console courtesy light works, will need to wait 'til tonite to see if the PRND321 light works when the sensor turns on the headlights. Only problem I have now is the wood veneer on the ashtray cover/door is peeling up at the corners. The plastic coating on top appears pretty thick, I don't think I can just heat it up with a hair dryer and flatten it back out, I guess I will need to hunt down yet another part.

great post. i have been wanting to tear out the center console for several reasons but have thought it was too involved. its not so bad when its explained so well, so thanks a lot everyone! reasons: -i think my PRNDL light is burnt -i also think my Power switch doesnt work -most of all, the position sensor is bad. sometimes it doesnt want to start. im wondering if it can be easily accessed once the console is out.

Some thoughts... The PRNDL light needs to have long wires or they will break again, and they may be broken at the terminals which poses a problem. The "Power" trans switch is the same way, but it's probably broken at the harness. The P-N safety switch is mounted on the transmission, not in the console.

oh another thing i should mention, my shifter is loose. wondering if i can adjust it with the console out. any thoughts? The P-N safety switch is mounted on the transmission, not in the console. is that hard to get at?

I did this fix last week. I extended the wires for the shifter and gear indicator light. Of course mine were broken and I never knew it lit up till reading this thread. LOL. The what gear your in shift indicator (orange) takes a #74 bulb on my 97 Aurora. I replaced with an LED which makes it brighter and nice looking. I used this. www.v-leds.com/Interior-LED/Gauge-Cluster-LED/White-LED/2-HID-WHITE-WEDGE-BASE-p4481040-1-2.htmlFor the whole clear plastic display the stock bulb was a #161 with a blue condom. I used a #194 bulb to make it a little brighter. An LED probably wouldn't work very well because it takes the sideways light off the bulb to illumintate the plastic and LEDs are too directional. I tried and it didnt work. You would need an LED bulb that illuminated directly off the side rather then out the top.

Ugh, yeah I need to change the gear shifter bulb and check the wiring. Bulb has been out for quite some time now...
When I changed the console and the glove compartment bulbs I was perplexed on why I was getting no power to them with interior lights on. Took me a few minutes and a voltage tester then the ahha! moment to figure out the ignition had to be in run or engine started to get power to these two lights. I can't figure why it was designed like this other than not running down the battery if you left either one open. Then again the car should shut them off after ten minutes regardless. Just thought I'd post that tidbit.

The clear plastic lights up but my orange shift indicator bulb appears to be burnt out. I noticed your link to the LED replacement ships a pair of lights, how many bulbs are needed for the shift indicator? I knew when I bought the car this light was out so I would like to fix it soon. I assume even though the LEDs are white it really brightens up the orange indicator? Also the clear plastic is lighting up fine so does this mean there is a good chance my wires are ok (I'm not familar with rewiring as some of you guys but not opposed to learning as long as I don't electrocute myself or my car ;D)

Anyone know if the local Auto stores carry the LED bulbs or are they only avail online? From the threads I need a 74 equivalent white LED bulb to fix my PRND321 light. Also, I am trying to understand 'automotive wire splicing' that everyone has done to their shift indicator light and power shift wires. I have done wiring in a house but never in a car (already saw a note about not using elec. tape for auto wire splicing). If I have the console apart want to take care of the wires while I'm there. Great pics everyone, that really helps with the write ups

;D Well I just today did my cousole to fix the shifter light. I was going to take many photos and do a PDF on the process for the 2001 v8 Aurora... but the cameras battery went dead halfway thru. But I can tell a bit and show what I did find right? Using pics on my photobucket, hopping this works. This below is the embarressment that awaited after removing the wood grain ( a fairly delicate use of a flat something to pop up the grains from cupholder back). Dirty Dirty... shows again why cleaning the console is a must! I also removed the storage bin and cupholder prior. I also had taken off the shifter plate and slider in the above. I found that in my 2001 Aurora that the bulb for the shifter was in fact attached TO the shifter plate from above down. I didn't get a photo of this... sorry. My wires where not short as I expected from other threads suggested. I bought from Advanced Auto both 73 and 37 bulbs as those two where prominent tpes listed, found after seeing my bulb it was a 37 and went with those; returned the other bulbs and splicing stuff I didn't use. I find knowing what a bulb looks like in VERY helpful so hope this helps others too. I swtiched the bulbs.. and took off the old bulbs little Blue Spacesuit (as I call it) and replaced with the new bulb suiting it up for teh mission. Later I found that the suit (blue cap) was torn some from wear and opted to just ditch it. I'm not particular of color and can probibly find a new one in time. I gave the bulb a test run... in it's lil suit after putting it in the socket. This is the now clean and respectable console area with slider in place (also cleaned) and with the new bulb. Tip i came across was when I tried to put the socket back onto the shifter plate ( twist this first when taking out then pull) I found it wouldn't go back in with bulb in. I had to take the bulb out.. place the socket in the hold and twist to lock.. THEN add bulb. I popped the clear plastic lense out of the plate as well to clean so made easier so didn't rub against the plastic when inserting as well. My final pic ( sorry so photo heavy!! ) of the whole thing togeather and what she shirts lights look like all lit up again. I enjoy seeing a plan come out okay.

Decided to take the plunge today and see if I could get the shift indicator light working without damaging my Aurora from lack of experience. I will say you guys who wrote the instructions/expectations down and added pics - awesome . Only real problem I had was I apparently broke the bulb housing for the shift indicator light (I thought I should just pull it out, on hind sight looks like I should have twisted ). When I put the new bulb in (#74) I glued and taped it in since it would not stay in "it's special place" ). Hopefully I will not have to replace that bulb anytime soon. I checked to make sure the bulb worked before I glued it to the housing. At first it did not come on, I was bummed, then I think I turned the interior lights on and then we had light ;D. I took a few pics I'll post later. Thanks everyone who documented this repair. I just did not have enough things lighting up in my Aurora ;D ;D ;D ;D There were no wires to the 'go faster button' on the shifter. Cleaned dust off the radio bezel and vents while it was off. Console was not very dirty (found a wrapped tooth pick, candy wrapper and three pennies (only one I could retrieve)). Now I have to figure out what to do next on the Aurora. I hope to get my plates soon. I did not realize it at the time but my plates are actually the same as one of the ACNA member's handle (hope he doesn't mind), at least the one I requested 'ROARA 97'.

I just need to replace mine. Every Aurora I went to look at had been smoked in, and this one has melt marks on the shift indicator strip. My woodgrain around that is also cracked, I just need to replace the whole shebang.

Alright, has anyone successfully changed the shift indicator bulb by accessing it from the front. As in pull the kick panels in front of the console and shimmy to the lamp? I might try, I think there may be too much in the way, but I don't know.
If not I'll be putting it off for another couple of months and doing it the write-up way.

Jprice: I don't know if you ever got the shifter off, but try pulling it all the way back to 1st gear, you will see the little slit where the c-clip is, just pop it out with a small screwdriver. Then push the litle shifter button and pull up
Anyways, did it today finally, I can see what gear I'm in now!! Haha my problem with the indicator light was the wires were severed so I soldered them back together and its working again. While in there I found a necklace, 12 cents and a budlight bottle cap (the latter has me sketchy on the previous owner's driving haha)

As long as you removed all the screws, you have to take out two by the ash tray, and I believe 6 in the little armrest compartment. Then you might have to do a little prying, the wood is also held in by some clips that unpop as you pull the console out but its really a piece of cake took me about 45mins

ahh okk, so i dont have to worry about popping the grain out cause it comes out with the console anyway right i have removed the 6 screws under the armrest, and the 2 in the ash, but it seems like something is still holding, the back is lose, and can move up, front dont budge

Yeah its all one piece you probably just need to pry at it a little, I used a screwdriver being careful not to mark up the edges of the grain or around it

Well I had to do it AGAIN haha, I guess I didn't seat the shift indicator bulb in the base correctly because it fell out (d'oh!)
Another thing that makes the console pop out easier is once everything is unscrewed and the knob is off, shift into drive or 3 (just so the shifter is in the middle) and the console pops out WAY easier, just give it a tug after that
