It already is! It is in the How-To's at the top of the section.

So, I see this fix doesn't work '95-'96 Classics. Does the part not exist for these models without replacing the entire fuel pum assembly?

I don't know, I haven't had the pleasure of dealing with one yet. Anyone else?

I don't know, I haven't had the pleasure of dealing with one yet. Anyone else? Different design level sensor, there is no known fix for the earlier style that i know of other than complete replacement.

I have records from the previous owner of my car. Apparently they have went to a shop to have this fixed before. However, they said they found lock ring, and the tabs on the tank rusted together. It says removal may break the tabs on the tank, or the fuel pump assembly. It also says that the owner decided to not have them procede any further, so they put it back together.
I am guessing this may be a bigger problem if they break then just replacing the sensor. I am at a lost as of what to do. Risk needing to buy a whole new fuel pump, or deal with the irractic gauge.

there are plenty of fixes for the broken tabs, there in the sticky section. minus well do it now before it gets worse anyways, and you can fix the level sensor while your at it. i dont think you run that much of a risk breaking the fuel pump though, just the retaining ring if its not already broken. sometimes if you dont take care of it, the pump will actually fall through the tank and float in the gas! there was a guy on here that had that happen to him not too long ago...
so i say do it, follow one of the repair procedures for the fuel pump retainer, and since you will have the pump out you can fix the level sensor with a mere extra 5 minutes, if that. always good to kill two birds with one stone.

Yah, thats what I was thinking! They took it in to the shop a few years ago...im sure its worse now....I need to fix that before it really gets bad. Plus....knowing how much gas you have is usually a nice thing also. :-P

Doesn't the DIC have a "Gallons Used" display? Anyone know how it's calculated or does it come from the level sensor?

My hubby just changed out the fuel pump on my 95 a few weeks ago. We followed these videos and had no real problem at all! The only problem was getting the retaining ring off. It was pretty rusted and took a little finessing to get it off. It finally did come off and did not break the tank. Put everything back together and she has been running fine. She has a slight surge, but I think it is the intake... it has a crack in it. That is the next fix on my baby. ;D

if you dont take care of it, the pump will actually fall through the tank and float in the gas! How is this possible?

His didnt fall through. The diameter at the top of the pump is larger than the opening in the top of the tank.

so it was above the tank line, floating in the gas? i guess that seems reasonable. when i read that though, i thought it was floating inside the gas tank, so theres where my thoughts went wrong. still a good idea to take care of it now.

Sucks I bought the repair kit and just started on my 97. the ring around the pump is rusted solid and is breaking when i tried to loosen it.
I'll sell the repair kit for $40 shipped if anyone wants to paypal it to me.

i did this too, it works for sure on a '99 hah, just make sure you seal the tank well, or else your SES will come on reading a small emissions leak, or otherwise thinking that your gas cap is off

So do I understand correctly? This won't work for 95s and 96s? That's a drag... My reserve fuel level is way too high (4 gallons) and I wanted to put a new sender in to fix it.

This is good fix here. Performed this today on a 99 and the gauge works perfectly now. I would like to add a thought or 2 to this for thos who are going to attempt it...
First...make sure you vacuum as much of the crud up as you can. It just accumulates there on top of the tank, and you risk some dropping into the tank itself when you finally release the retaining ring.
Second, the retaining ring was a bear to try and remove, but it does come off with some perseverance. After replacing the arm, when you go to put things back together, the ring goes on much easier if you apply some sort of lube to it first...I used Vaseline. WD-40 eats rubber over time, so I would discourage the use of that because the o-ring that seals the pump to tank appears to be made out of rubber. But trust me.....it popped right back on 10 times easier lubed up. Maybe even a little soap on your finger could work...I dunno. But after getting it back in, gauge work fine with perfect fuel pressure.
Thanks for this write up
