Here's a quick timeline:
Four days ago my friend comments on how cold my A/C is. I thought to myself "Yeah, I really take it for granted sometimes. It's nice to have ice cold A/C in a 13 year old car when it could break so easily"
Three days ago I'm on the way to a party at my roommate's parent's place about 50 minutes away. I hear a loud bang from around the hood and don't think much of it. I realize toward the end of the drive that it isn't blowing cold air. I think "Dang, I probably have to get it recharged. Oh, well." Didn't guess that the bang was related to the lack of A/C.
Two days ago I'm on the way back home from my roommate's place and as soon as I start the Aurora I hear a loud humming noise coming from under the hood. I stop and check but the sound stopped so I couldn't find the source... I decided to go home because I couldn't fix it there anyway. It started humming again on the highway and I turned the air off to be able to hear it better. As soon as I killed the air the sound stopped. I turned the air on and I hear it, turn it off and it goes away. I rolled down the windows and kept going with the air off. When I get off the highway close to home it starts humming again intermittently, but goes away after 30 seconds or so.
Yesterday I didn't drive it at all out of fear of it breaking it more.
Today I left to take it into the shop and it hummed once right after I started it. I left it with them at about 10:30am and explained what I have posted above and said what I thought the problem might be, they said they would look at it and call me with what they found. Got a call a few hours later saying that the compressor shaft had broken, and that the entire compressor needed to be replaced. He said that the repair would be $1,270.55 total... I didn't know what to say. I thought that my A/C needed recharged, maybe a belt needed to be tightened or replaced, not a new compressor.
So the $1,270 covers a new compressor, a complete flush of the A/C system to clear out any metal shavings, a recharge, and a couple other small things that I didn't catch. I told them to go ahead and do it, I wanted to do it myself but I just don't have the expertise to undertake such a project. I'll add it to the list, I guess... I think my grand total of money spent on the Aurora is nearing $10,000. *sigh*
