my air induction parts arrived

i got a polished stainless steel tube with a K&N cone filter and all the clamps and adapters. i read that they improve performance and decrease fuel consumption. anything that gives you more horses and uses less gas is good right?

well it's been sitting here beside my desk for a week. i'm just a bit hesitant to install it. i love the way my car is working right now. fuel efficiency is as high as it could be with all the stock parts.

i don't want to do anything that will hurt my car. do you guys suggest i install this? i know how, it would probably take me 5 minutes. maybe some of you that have done this could give me some encouraging words. anyone that's had a horror story, let me know.

for now i'll keep looking at it and ponder.

crap. the air temp sensor does not fit onto this part. there's a hole where it's supposed to go. looking at it you can tell it's too small. it comes with a rubber seal but it's too tight. i broke a small piece of plastic off of the air sensor. it won't cause any problems but the after market tube is just not gonna work.

i thought about modifing the sensor but if that fails, i'm out the money for the air intake kit plus what a new sensor costs, and i'd be willing to bet the sensor is pretty expensive.

if it wasn't for that, everything would have been fine.

I trimmed the side clips off of the sensor so it would fit into the hole. My only concern is that if I ever wish to re-install the original air box I'll probably have to purchase a new sensor.

suprisingly enough, it was.

the instructions don't say to trim it. IF i decide to trim it, i'll make sure i get a spare first. once you trim it, it will not stay firmly in the stock airbox unless you glued it or something.

keep track of your gas mileage, if it goes up significantly i was thinking about custom making one for my car.

Theoretically yes, but remember that your new intake will be sucking in hot air from the engine compartment. The stock design takes in cooler air from the front wheelwell. You might need to buy or build some kind of heatshield as Supa has done (I think).

yeah, when i make intake tubes for my other cars i run the tube inside the fender and have the tube about 5 inches above the rain guard. and depending if theres anything important in that wheel well, ill cut into so i can get some more air. actually, i think thats gonna be my next project!

indeed i have, it makes a huge difference

first i made it with some plastic sheet and plastic welded the corners together

then i wrapped all the intake with insulation reflective tape.

Everybody with the aftermarket intake has to modify the IAT sensor. I actually had Ebay sellers assure me via email that the sensor would fit with no modifications. Idiots. I knew it wouldn't fit and just wanted to see what they would say. Most guys cut and trim the sensor and seal it with some high temp silicone.

someone actually dyno'd the results of their mods. this is a 96. very intresting:

Baseline---------190.0HP---196.7TQ
+Intake----------198.3HP---202.9TQ
+80mm TB-----206.7HP---214.0TQ

The air intake is the same as the one pictured above. These numbers are from the wheels.

After these mods, we're talking 272HP/282TQ. If stock is 250/260, it's +22HP and +22TQ. Air Intake was cheap, the TB was from RSM Racing and he would have gotten reamed. they list it for $460. geez. just order one from the 4.6 northstars brand new from GM or something.

these were not economical mods. we'll guess the air intake was about $20 so $480 total. that's $21 a horse. not economical at all. however, these are the numbers. they do not seem far fetched at all so i belive he's telling the truth.

That person is TaylorD. He owns a Bonneville SSEi now. He also got a Corsa exhaust for his car. Then it conked out and he got rid of it. I tell you, someone in his area should have gone and taken the TB and exhaust off the car and put the stock stuff back on!

I think Taylor was able to do a 15.7 or so in the 1/4. But that was before he got the Corsa, and his car was a non-autobahn. I think his SSEi does 13's or 12's?

very simple, when you look in the pictures, you can see that little black clip, i took that from somewhere else on one of my old cars so it was just laying around, just unclip that, the clamps and peal it out of there, heh.

i FINALLY got it installed. i've been pondering about it ever since it arrived. i finally figured out how to get the air sensor in there without cutting it.

the hole for the air sensor is the only problem as i mentioned earlier. the hole itself is too big and the rubber grommet that it comes with only works if you cut the plastic off the sensor, meaning it will no longer work with the stock parts.

instead of the rubber grommet i used the foam washers from a blank CD spindle. 2 washers were thick enough. it stayed on well and i then clamped it down with zip ties.

works fine. i don't know how heat resistant the washers are, i would not trust them for anything more than a test run.

i found no seat of the pants difference with this intake. it didn't even sound different with the windows up. there was an odd sound mentioned in the thread below. i will try it with the stock system and see if i can get the sound to re-occur:

i would say that this cheap ebay kit is not the way to go at all. the pipe diameter is very small. the filter iself could be bigger. the silicone connectors were pretty decent. actually, most of the problems with this kit are in the metal tube itself. it needs to be a larger diameter, better finishing and a properly sized hole with 2 notches for the stock air sensor. the ends of the pipe are rough and damaged the silicone. i had to sand it myself and clean it really good.

i do not feel comfortable with this cold air intake and will be returning my stock airbox on there. for little to no improvement and a lot of uncertainties, i don't think it's worth it.

a supercharger on the other hand....

Is you upper radiator hose collapsed? Might be time for a new one or a new res cap.

oh ya - and clean off the master cylinder!

the hose? no it's fine. i think it's the angle the picture was taken at. there is a curve at that spot and it's supposed to be there. the picture makes it seem broken. in the last picture there's a closeup of that hose and you can see it's fine.

master cylinder? i'm no mechanic but i belive it's the metal thingy under the brake fluid resevoir. looks clean for me unless you're trying to poke fun at my overly clean engine

*edit* i put the stock air intake back. i feel better now and with good cause. the maf had two bits of rubber stuck to it. red rubber. the air filter had a red silicone attachment on it. the pipe was very rough on that side and scratched it. some must have gotten loose. there may be more inside my engine now but i doubt a small piece like that would last for very long in a cylinder.
