Give away cars, lose money, go out of business. Who at GM doesn't get this? Did they think GMAC was going to bail them out forever? The Cobalt, well reviewed in the car magazines, was introduced with a $1500 rebate!
The only answer I can see is for GM to build all price competative lines offshore. Screw the UAW, they made their own bed, lie in it. When, as you mentioned, $1500 of every car purchase is in health benefits and UAW workers are making more than teachers, somethin's gotta give.

Inefficiency and ineptitude might be a problem as well. My father's friend worked at GM's Linden, NJ plant. He told us that many employees would sit around, bs half the day and collect a paycheck for next to no effort on their part. It was a dream job in Linden, where work was light, pay was great and no one got fired. Underworked and way overpaid, the management did not seem to care. Go figure

Is this GM USA and GM Canada, cuz my uncle works that the plant in St Catharines Ont, home of the LS2, LS4 and LS6 and they're busy over there.

Go figure The UAW prevents them from closing plants or reducing workforces at plants that have low/no demand. It's not that management doesn't care, they can't do anything about it. Some plants are quite busy, as Jim mentions. Engine plants especially, and I believe the Bowling Green assembly tends to run overtime most of the time.
