Went to test drive a 2005 Mustang (not for me), and get this. Salesman said they needed a $100 deposit, and then, I could only take it around the block. Can you believe that? Said they want to keep the mileage down and the riff-raff from just taking them out and beating the crap out of them.

I can definately believe it. although I was never asked to deposit any money when I went for a test drive. They just needed a copy of my license and I'm 19. How old are you? I really don't blame them though. There are too many people who will beat the absolute living snot out of a car because they're too immature and disrespectful to respect property that is not theirs. It's sad really.. I would be pissed if I bought a new car just to find out some punk took it out and beat the crap out of it before I bought it. Buying a car is a very personal thing.

So true. In the 90's I was making six figures as the VP of a recycling factory. The job was hands on and required me to wear jeans and work boots. I stopped at a Honda dealership after work and the jerkoff salesman attempted to require a credit check before the test drive. I drove by the next day in my new $30k Chrysler and flipped him off, he mos def saw me as he was in the lot with a customer. A really good moment.
Did you indicate you were a serious buyer? Not being the final purchaser, the salesman may have been correct in giving you the blowoff. If the buyer had been there before and was looking for a second opinion, or you had the buyer with you, a different tune may have been played. And just common sense, the Kia dealer will beg you to take a ride.

In the 90's I was making six figures as the VP of a recycling factory. Wow! I didn't realize there was that kind of money in recycling. Then again, that is how Mr. Burns made his fortune back...

Letitroll, I could understand him blowing me off if he didn't know me, but this would have been the third vehicle purchased from them. I'm usually pretty serious when it comes to vehicles. Too much time involved to screw around. I don't like to waste their time either. My wife was at work, thats why I wanted to drive it first, since she doesn't get off until later. They know me, they know my wife. That's what really pissed me off. Custom, I am 40 years old with greying hair, so I sure can't be mistaken for a young punk anymore!

I am 40 years old with greying hair That's what I was getting at. You have proved your seriousness and the third party is your wife, so not really a tirekicker. I would be on the phone screaming to the manager and owner about how you're headed across town to buy from the other Ford dealer after you call Dearborn. I find most generalizations about car salesmen are quite close, with a few exceptions of course. You have no idea. Many recyclers I know are millionaires many times over. Mom and Dad told you to clean your plate because starving kids in China could live off what you threw away? How about former truck drivers owning millions and millions of dollars in property from what we throw away. Just saw one of my recycling friends in his latest Turbo 911. He's 61 and hasn't worked in 10 years.

Auroralover was that the GT or the V6? Was it the slushbox or manual? If its the V6, that guys a moron as the V6 is a freaking dog.
We rented a red GT for a month and half when my dads jaguar was wrecked. It was the only GT in the whole area. We beat the living hell out of it. It was automatic, and we would brake torque the ****** to 6000rpm, let off the brake and floor the gas all the way up the road spinning the tires the whole time.
Every time you would press down on the pedal the tranny would make a really loud-pitched whine when upshifting, a sure sign of tranny failure. It only had 1700 miles when we turned it back too lol.

Steven, this was a V6 automatic that I wanted to test drive. They had no GT's on the lot. He said the longest a GT sat on their lot was 2 days before it was sold.

I guess I'm the only loner that doesnt like the new Mustang.
I never bought into the whole retro thing with new cars,
PT Cruiser 300 (C) Thunderbird Mustang Chevy SSR Beetle
I guess I support progress as opposed to nostalgia

You'll never top the original Mustang of the late 60's. This is geared for older folks that wanna re-live their lost youth. And to the youth of today that think its "cool"
I can appreciate the modern power, but not the nostalgic look.

Well, I for one really like the "new" styling. If I was offered a 2005 mustand or a 1965-1969 mustang, I would have to go for the old one though.
Am I included in the youth of today, because I definately think it's cool! ;D

I liked the retro flava in the '94-'98 model, enough retro + modern to make what was old new again. The '99-'04 went a little too far to modern for me with the creased lines and one note interior. Now the '05 goes way too far in retro, especially the interior with the aluminium option, yuk. It looks like a '65 Fairlane interior.
It all started with Mazda's Miata. Then Chrysler had been very successful with the early Prowler, PT Crusier, and now with the 300C. Ford and Chevy are following suit with the SSR, Thunderbird, and now the latest Mustang. Marks that just make really good cars like Honda, BMW, and Mercedes don't rely on these gimicks to try to bring in buyers.

We rented a red GT for a month and half when my dads jaguar was wrecked. It was the only GT in the whole area. We beat the living hell out of it. Abuse like this is the reason that these new restrictions exist. Having a little fun with a rental is one thing, but I can't agree with purposely damaging another's property for your own amusement. I read that Ford is discontinuing the Thunderbird again at the end of the 2005 MY. I think the problem is that it was re-created too high end... not enough men amidst their respective mid-life crises could afford them. I guess I support progress as opposed to nostalgia I like the "new retro" look to a certain extent... a combination of progress AND nostalgia! What's funny is that many cars in the 50's and 60's were designed to look curvy and futuristic, but "modern" cars never ended up looking like that until NOW when the designs are revived! A paradox of sorts... I would love if they would replicate some of the classic body styles of the late 60's (Pontiac GTO, Dodge Charger among my favorites) but use modern materials and components. THAT would be awesome!
