You should take it in and have a dealer look at it. The airbag system is serious business that shouldn't be messed with unless you know what you are doing.

I got this warning in my '96 when it was really cold. It re-set itself automatically after a restart. Does it appear every time?

You can do one of 2 things. 1. Hit the front bummer with a sludge hammer. Harder is better. (recommended) 2. Hit a tree at 35 MPH. Make sure the tree is at least 6 inches thick. (not recommended) If the airbag goes off then the system works. If it doesn't work you should do a barrel roll and buy a moped. Seriously, the airbag system is dangerous. If it goes off accidentally due to some error in the system it might kill you.

For safety sake and peace of mind, do you have a local mechanic you trust? He might be able to recommend an independent shop that specializes in secondary restraint systems. Someone like that should be familiar with the GM air bag error codes and might be able to tell you what "Code 38" is without hours of labor. Just a thought.

(the moment of truth he says, pluging the airbag back in LOL) and again i never said i was going to service the airbag.. i wanted to clear the code using a COMPUTeR.. im getting the chance to use a $8,000 snap on scanner and wanted to know what is was.. if its clearable.. how i could reset the entire dit.. anything?

Personal insults or inflammatory remarks are a clear violation of this board's code of conduct, so cut it out.
By "dit" I assume you mean the DIC (Driver Information Center)? You have not mentioned what the model year of your Aurora. That will determine what equipment is needed to read/clear codes (1995 is different from the rest). Any scanner that will hook up to the car should have an option to clear all codes. Do that and see if the warning returns.

Code 38 would indicate a '95. So i'll go for that. I can't find anything for that code, you're going to need to get it scanned. Hopefully your snap-on scanner is OBD1.5 compliant.
Also, the ***** across the screen only appears for more serious problems, like "Low oil pressure" or "engine hot". My '96 did the same thing when the airbag warning came up.
If you are so anxious to get rid of the warning, just disconnect your battery for a bit. That might clear it. But an airbag code is usually a soft code, meaning it resets every key start. If yours is on all the time, it's a big problem. Get it fixed.

Apocalypse can over react at times....
Don't worry about him I think what he was trying to get across though was even if you are not testing the Airpag and are doing nothing to it like you wrote it can be dangerous to even be driving a car taht has that message up on the computer. I don't like taking the cars to the dealers either... but you should get it checked out for saftey

I would start by removing the airbag fuse, then find the front sensor, trace this to the passenger side inner fender which is should be eaasy becuase the wire is encapsulated by yellow sheathing. From there it connects to a module and then it goes on to connect into the control module under the drivers seat if memory serves. The two airbags can also be looked at as far as the wiring. Drivers comes out right under the column somewhere and can also be seen because of the yellow, same goes for passenger, I think it routes towards the kick panel??? Anyway, your problem is probably related to a connector needing to be reseated or a pinched wire. There is no real danger if the car is off, fuse is pulled and you are careful.

thankyou very much for all the information stated above between my two posts lol VERY USEFUL information.. i am on a scale of 1-10 concerend about driving it im 5-10 clearly the car has been in a very minor accident (fender didnt line up exaclty it was off some.. that was fixed today very easily) Im going to try clearing the codes, the problem comes up before i start the car (with the key turned forward powered on) the battery was dead when i bought the car (jumped it to test drive lol) changed it out since then, it was fine, i have very cheap acess due to a family owned battery shop..its always the first thing i do to cars when i get them.. i try dissconnecting it again to clear it out.. but i have no check engine light ether way fyi.. im not doing any of the work.. im just providing some general information to my certified mechanic.. my cousin.. also my neghboor comes out everytime i have the hood up and also does alot of work for me.. like my feul filter problem i had..hes also a certified mechanic.. i do some of the work just not anything important lol im learning though.. i can tell you whats wrong with your car 99% of the time but hell if i could fix it (depending) i just figured someone out there would know what this code 38 is.. its an airbag problem thats all i can say lol.. ill figure out what it is.. OK MY car is a 1995 oldmobile aurora with the 4.0L obviosuly dit i mean yes DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER (sorry DIC not DIT) my user name is 334000km95 so i thought u would figure it out my bad i should know better im on the intrepid fourms too

There is no real danger if the car is off, fuse is pulled and you are careful. we will check the system tommorow being as careful as possible.. we wouldnt tackle something if we couldnt do it..(easier said then done) every airbag thread contains many danger warnings.. i know all about it.. and like kobrak said we should be good if we pull the fuse etc we are going to try the scanner first.. then check everything.. ill let everyone know if we find a gremlin! i would rather the airbag work if i crash this heavy car! oh and yah the dots are spread out a little like so *a * i * r * b * a *g * p * r * (something like that) * c * o * d * e * 3 * 8 *

Let me know if you need readings from the front sensor as I think I still have one lying around from replacing the entire system in my 97. I was sold the wrong fron sensor that I beleive is for a 96. I'll check tonight as I might have thrashed it.

Dude, Scotty is an admin and this is the second time he has tried to intervene in this thread so NO, he is not to late to the party. Most other boards you would have been tossed. The only party would be if you got banned. You need to chill just a tad. There, I have put my .02 in to the mix. Could luck with the airbag issue 33400km95.

This thread had been dead nearly a week before he posted in it again. But that really doesn't matter. It was just a playful jab at another user. I couldn't care less if he is an admin or not. I treat all members equally. Most other boards you would have been tossed. The only party would be if you got banned. You need to chill just a tad. I am not feeling the love. Does this mean we are not BFFs anymore?
