Got mine installed yesterday! I'll get better pictures (and pics that can be added to the writeup) soon, here are a couple that I shot last night: The hotspots aren't near as bad in person, my camera just captured the light differently. I noticed this while I was installing the light... the classic would look AWESOME with a lip spoiler. Imagine that the metal part of the trunk panel was the end of the car. Check it out:

Nice, man! Randy has the lead in most panels completed as of right now... Can't say I'm surprised. ;D

so has anyone hooked it up as a brake light yet? or just a tail light? If I had a classic I'm thinking I'd make it into a big brake light.

i actually really want to do this, but hook it up as a brake light. It seems like a very effective brake light, it just screams: "I'm Stopping NOW!!"
And if a person hits me, and claims they didn't see my brake lights, they are full of it, haha
**I just thought of this, it would be so cool to find a way to wire it up so that the more you step on the brake the brighter the light gets, i know that would take some serious electronics, and i don't have the skill nor patience for that kind of stuff.
All i know is that some sort of potentiometer would have to be hooked up to the brake pedal, and then wired into the LED's

All i know is that some sort of potentiometer would have to be hooked up to the brake pedal, and then wired into the LED's IDK about that, but it wouldn't be hard to hook up as a brake light. You would just need to have some of the lights wired to the tail lights and the rest wired to the brake light. So then the additional lights illuminate upon braking. Thus, brake lights.

The LED that is recommended (the same one that I used) doesn't have alternating lights. It is either all lights on or all lights off. It would work alright if you could get one that had two seperate sets of wires each controlling half of the strip assuming that they alternate but this one wouldn't work for that.
I thought about trying to wire the one LED into both wires so that it would brighten when the brake was pressed, but LEDs don't work this way. They are either on or off, I'm 99% sure of it.
If you wanted it to just be a brake light then you could just connect it to a different wire, it would be pretty simple. Not my taste tho, I want my rear panel to be more subtle than screaming "I'M BRAKING" to the person behind me lol
It would also be simple to wire it in to be a turn signal in this manner. You could buy two seperate strips with alternating lights. Wire one on each side into the standard "lights on" wire, but connect the second set into the turn signal for the respective side. I wouldn't mind doing that, might be pretty cool. If someone tries it they should definitely take a video and post it.

Oh yeah! I knew that. Ha ha. I would think it could be wired in just as easy. I don't know that for a fact.

Well wait. My idea was a lot more simple. In the tail light aren't the brake lights just an extra bulb? So for instance, when you have tail lights on it illuminates 1 bulb, when you brake a 2nd bulb illuminates which makes it brighter. I always thought that's how it works but I've never had to change a brake light.
If that's the case then have 1 strip up top wired into the tails, and a second strip down low wired to the brake bulbs.
So you have light all the time, but it gets brighter when you hit the brakes. This would work best if the light emits well from only top or bottom .I'm not sure if that would be an issue or not.

No, there is not two bulbs for brake/tails. The brake/tails are one bulbs with a bigger filament for the brake light. Then there is a turn signal bulb. Total of two bulbs. Ok so is it still extra wiring that only lights up (sees voltage) when the brakes are applied?

Sall, we mentioned above the other idea. I have had an LED that only uses every other light at times, and the opposite sequence at other times. I'm sure you could buy an LED that would do this, and in theory if you hook up one strand to the brake and the other to the normal lights, the LED would have half power when just the lights on and full power with the brake depressed. It would be easiest to do it this way I think, no need to run two strips.

good job sall! you should change your signature if you are done with the LED tails.

Oh, i forgot about those, i though your sig was refering to the rear panel. but upon looking at it again, i see that it clearly says "lit up LED rear panel" in the completed mods section. my mistake lol

well i just had a brilliant idea, its just going to be a little hard to impliment.
What if you use 2 led strips, one for each side and wire it in such a way that when you step on the brakes the both light up, but when you have the turn signal on, that side flashes and the other side is a constant brake light? the tail lights on my dad's '92 firebird work the same way... all i'd need is a "gate" that allows one wire (turn signal) to override the brake light power.
There would definetly be alot more wiring involved in this, than in the regualr install, considering there would be wires for both sides.

That would be too much for me, I think that if half of the panel flashed it would both give the person behind me a seizure. It would also scream "I'M TURNING" to anyone who could see it haha.

If it's convenient, would you mind posting them? I think the thread could benefit from having them up here for everyone to see.

I meant diagrams for tails/brake/turn signals. I know you have that fancy program with everything on it, if there's a wiring diagram in there it might be useful. ;D

Thanks so much for showing me yet another mod that I can't wait to do, I'll add it to my ever-growing list. I'll get to it someyear, the repairs always go first and I don't seem to be running out of them.

I used red, but I would recommend white. I think it would match the taillights better. If you notice in a lot of peoples pics you can see the difference between the lights. It is more noticeable the farther away you get. Below is a link to several more pics, I will add more to that album shortly. s722.photobucket.com/albums/ww230/AuroraRandy/LED%20Taillight%20Mod/
