wow..this thing is gonna kill me. 100 miles later and about a week and a half from my last $1500 service visit, my alternator crapped out and will not charge the battery for nothin. i just dont get it....every week for the past month something goes wrong with the damn thing and im afraid to drive it.
i hope it wont be more than $600 or $700 this time cause thats gonna break my bank right about there.
and also, i heard the alternator is water cooled, oh how nice. More $$$$.
have any of you ever replaced your alternator? and how much $?

Fear not - changing the alternator is not rocket science: In general, all you have to do is loosen the belt tensioner, ubolt the old alternator and hook up the new one. It's listed for about $250, so its not that bad. 2.4 Hrs of estimated labor time suggests that its not in the most convenient location in the world, however. You have to ask one of the classic guys as to where it is exactly if you want to DIY. If not, you're looking at a ~$400 job. Hope this helps.

steven, maybe you should consider buying a used car extended warranty... there are all types out there, and it seems that it might serve you well!

Oh no Steven. Keep your chin up. This round of trouble has got to stop soon. All the stuff is not connected so it's not something you're doing wrong. Have you run a car fax report? Might point to the reason for the problems.

No panic as the alternator is not water cooled, However the removal has 11 steps including draining the rad. I have the info for a 1996 available via e-mail if req.

Not too bad a DIY if motivated to save some $$$ 1-Remove rear seat cushion 2-Disconnect negative battery cable 3-Remove upper radiator shroud 4-Remove right and left cooling fans 5-Remove accessory belt 6-Remove top alternator bolts, disconnect cable and regulator connector 7-Remove ground strap and P/S line bracket to gain access 8-Remove lower bolts 9-Remove lower radiator hose(drain radiator) 10-Remove air inlet duct 11-Remove alternator through top left side of the engine compartment Uh, don't forget to refill the cooling system, have fun!!

The procedure seems easy enough and is worth saving the $150-200 IMO

I gotta get me one of them handy dandy manuals y'all are readin' from...! Even with an extended warranty, I've learned already that it won't fix *everything*
