Recently while attempting to repair my coil issue, an unidentified component broke.
The item is bolted onto the firewall above the coils, it is a long flat black box that has a thin tube coming out of it and it goes down in to somewhere, it has one bolt on each side which holds it in place on the firewall, well while removing a bolt I heard a air leak of some sort for about 3 seconds, then it quit (??) then when I took both bolts off the tube snapped, it was EXTREMELY delicate, or heatr damaged that it caused it to snap with very minimal movement.
So, how important is this "box", whats it do?

can you or someone explain what role it plays, and what could be the result of not fixing it?

can you or someone explain what role it plays, and what could be the result of not fixing it? TX, J The FSM states: "The engine supplies vacuum to operate the cruise control system. The vacuum is stored in a vacuum tank for use when the engine is unable to provide adequate vacuum for the systems. Refer to figure 10 for vacuum tank mounting location." So sayth the book of Olds, 1995, 9B-2.

Check to see if there is a stainless steel line attached to the throttle from the module on the firewall, it should look like a brake cable type line, a picture would really help, I would but my pics are at home...can someone else post an engine pic?

If you open your hood, it is on the very center of the firewall, at the very top, when I say very top, its pretty much above the coil packs...its a long rectangular black box, you cant miss it, when your hood is closed it probably almost touches one with the other, that is how visible it is....and of course on the VERY thin tube comes out of the bottom right corner of the box.
I dont have a digi cam, otherwise I would post an image.

yup....the thin tube plugs into it....just out of curiousity I blew into the tube, and it blows back out, but I havent had any noticable change in performance so I am really wondering how important that box 's function was, and what could the result of not fixing it do if anything.

It's difficult to say how important it is - especially seeing that the rest of us don't seem to have one! Maybe GM decided it wasn't necessary after all because the engine supplies enough vacuum. here's my underhood -

well i did follow the other end of the thin tube to see where it lead to...and it plugs into 2 other areas, dont know what those areas are for, but im going to scour the internet for larger images to show you where it leads to...otherwise i'll just have to deal with it.

I'm saving up for that at the next oil change, so as long as it's OK until then.

yeah the fluid gets moisture in it from getting pads changed etc. and whenever you slam the brakes it pulses the fluid real fast and that gets it dark really quick. also if you never have it changed it can rust out the entire system. it is about $90 to have the brake fluid flushed. its almost all labor.
