I went and bought a K&N filter today, but I forgot the part number and ended up with the wrong one, so I took it back and they didn't have the right one in stock so I'm still using a regular air filter. Anyway, here's the interesting part - the one they gave me in error fitted a 4.6 North* Cadillac STS - and it was thinner and smaller all round than the right one. I'm suprised that the bigger motor would have a much smaller air filter, surely this would affect how well the motor runs, comments?

I always assumed it was more related to the CFM of air brought thru the TB as opposed to the surface area of the filter. I havent seen an STS OEM airbox, but would love to.

To clear up any confusion as to which K&N air filter the Aurora takes: 1995/99: 33-2086 2001/03 4.0: 33-2063-1 2001/02 3.5: 33-2063-1 ________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

My MAF screen looks a helluva lot cleaner lately then it did with the stock filter. I've heard the arguments about K&N filters passing silicates (sand) thru, but I dont believe that 100%. Proper oiling maintenance of the filter should help with that problem, no?

I've seen a lot more positive comments about K & N than I've seen negatives, so I thought I'd try one out. My question wasn't about K & N but why does the 4 litre Aurora have an air cleaner that's 20% bigger than the one on the 4.6 litre STS. I'll still try a K & N if I can find somewhere that has one my size.

In regards to the first question, I believe the new car and 98+ STS have smaller filters than the classic. This could be that the classic has more capability than is needed, or that the new one is getting the shaft, or more likely, that the airflow is just different. On many cars, you'll see the airflow mainly goes through one small part of the filter, you can see the dirt build up in just one spot. So making the filter twice as big would have little effect. But if you can get air to flow through more of the filter, then you can increase airflow even with a smaller filter. Of course it's possible that under part-throttle, it just flows through that small area, thus making it dirtiest, but under WOT, it flows through more of the filter area. Who knows...
