I got the 98 Aurora 4.0 Liter V8 and I have had a problem twice in this winter.
For a day or so each occurance my traction control was stuck off and the light came on. Of course my reaction was to switch it on/off on the button but nothing could turn it back on. I could tell it was really off as well because my traction was quite diffrent.
Could this be because I have some worn down tires in need of a change or is something wrong with the traction control system?

Worn tires would not be causing the light to come on. The fault is with the traction control system itself. _________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

In another post didn't you mention a bad wheel speed sensor ? If so then that's the reason your traction control is not working. It won't work until the bad sensor is replaced and your ABS may not work either.

Open fault on the WSS, no doubt about it. Get a scan of the codes to be sure, but experience is telling me you need to replace that hub assembly.

I could tell it was really off as well because my traction was quite diffrent. Be aware that TC (when working) only kicks in when one of the wheels begins to actually lose traction and slide, and doesn't activate in everyday normal driving on dry surfaces. My point is that your Aurora should do just fine without TC, and it wouldn't seem like everyday driving would be affected. What do you mean by "traction was quite different"?

Well I know about the only coming on when tires start to skid but when I had the problem a couple times and the light came on and said Traction Off, the tires seemed to not grip the road very well even on normal every day turning.

Hmm, that doesn't sound like a Traction Control issue to me... perhaps it could be your tires (if they are getting old or need to be rotated) or a worn part of your suspension that is causing that "feel" when you make your turns.
